Some of our fans think we can do better than Mark Byington. Hope they're right.

Ah the ole we can do better than the guy that just bailed to the all mighty James Madison. Be careful what you wish for. After our last coach that we thought moved laterally to North Texas, we were saddled with Mike Balado.

I'll admit I know next to nothing about Southern's basketball history, but it seems to me that he did an amazing job there, with recruiting at the very least. You've been in the mix at the top since you joined the league, which is (also admittedly) not what I was expecting.

We still have Balado. We may not win but we will chase the zebras to the dressing room and give them a good cussing along the way.

He did do an amazing job. I hate to see him go. Some of our fans are just in denial.

Random prediction:

The number of openings this year is far fewer than average
The number of openings next year is far greater than average.

Some schools will give coaches a pass due to the Pandemic and the season getting cancelled before teams had a chance to qualify for the NCAA's etc.

Agreed for the most part, but some of our fans think that anything short of a conference championship every year in every sport is a failure of that particular coach or of the AD. It doesn't matter that he's won 20+ games for the last three years or that he graduates his players or that he's kept his program clean. He has not won a championship and in some of their minds that is a fireable offense.

Having said that, there are some head-scratching losses and some leads that we absolutely should not have lost, but I think he overall did well during his time here.

It will be interesting to see who we get as a replacement.

With the severely limited resources we gave him, even being a conference title contender every season should be viewed as a miracle. He'll have a much easier time being successful at JMU.

Some of our fans raised an eyebrow that we could lose a coach to a CAA school, but the reality is they invest a lot more in their basketball program than we do including higher pay for coaches and brand new facilities.

Unless we get serious about basketball, I don't think we'll find another Byington. This is quite a first task for our new AD. I'm excited to see what direction we can go in. I'm just glad we have Benko instead of Klownlein making this decision.

They're in denial because they didn't get to say "...see, I told you he should be fired...".

Looks like we're hiring Chris Beard assistant Brian Burg.

Be careful. We hired a Pitino assistant. Over the years a very good coach just lousy at everything else.
