America's 25 Worst Colleges

Anyone recognize any? Didn't recognize any until #1 on the list -- a school with a storied tradition.

Surprised Sitting Bull or Ilisagvik didn't make it. Those schools look like mobile homes.

I've heard of a lot of them, because a lot of them are in the Carolinas and two of them a few miles from where I work!

Heard of Stillman because I watched the Cosby show.

Heard of Rust College because I travel Mississippi a decent bit and of course MVSU.

You may be thinking of Hillman, the setting for A Different World where Denise attended for a year before going back to The Cosby Show. It's a fictional HBCU set in an unidentified part of Virginia but I don't think it was meant to be a stand-in for a real-world school (I remember being told it was supposed to be a Morehouse/Spelman hybrid but that may have to do with footage being shot at Spelman and I think Clark Atlanta).

I've at least heard of 17 of the top 25 and 8 honorable mentions. Sad that 12 of the top 25 are HBCU including #1 which is also the only D1 school on the list.

This is pretty much just a list of HBCUs, which means their criteria are probably flawed and don't take into account the missions of the universities and the populations they serve.

Also not sure why OP thinks some tribal colleges that are the only higher Ed available in those areas should be on the list.

Agreed. The list looked like mostly HBCU's, former women's colleges, and small liberal arts schools.

I had heard of all but four of them.

25, 19, 14, 13, 12, 8, 2, Emmanual, Davis & Elkins, and Montevallo are D2.

Emory & Henry, Paine, Cazenovia, Montserrat, Martin Luther?, Wheelock, Maine-Machius?, are or I think are D3.

Stillman, Brewton Parker, Rust, Voorhees, Talladega, Lindsey Wilson, University of Science and Arts, Campbellsville, Montana-Western and Florida Memorial are or I think they are NAIA.

Unknown:
Unity
Wilson
Johnson
Maine College of Art
Baptist College of Florida

I am not familiar with non-football schools, only the ones that had articles about adding the sport.

A lot of these schools are on the list on the failing grades on debt, and in turn, the diplomats be considered junk. Raising the tuition for the 4 years is trying to survive to keep their doors open.

Mt. Ida merged with my alma mater, and IIRC it was pretty abrupt.

#14 St. Andrew’s left D2 in 2012, #12 Morris College was never D2, and Paine College is a D2 SIAC member since 1985. South Carolina-Aiken has been a D2 PBC member since 1990.

The vast majority of students at the University of Montevallo are from the state of Alabama, not out of state. Our basketball, soccer, and volleyball teams pull in a lot of out of state folks, but they have scholarships. If you apply yourself (unlike me) you will do well at Montevallo. In state tuition is very reasonable, IMO.
Baptist College of Florida is just like Bethany Bible College, located in Dothan,AL, my hometown. Both are meant to just train people for the ministry.

I'm surprised Pensacola Christian College didn't make the list, and they are much bigger than Baptist College of Florida. And by bigger, in addition to enrollment number, I also mean that PCC offers more degrees than just preparing pastors for the ministry or missionaries for the mission field. A couple of my friends graduated from there, but when one of them decided to get another degree at another college, the other college refused to give him credit for the courses he took at PCC. That was because back then, PCC accredited itself. Anyone else see a problem with that?? Don't know if that is still the case or not now that PCC is accredited by TRACS- Transnational Association of Christian Colleges & Schools. PCC does have athletics in the NCCAA. They won the men's soccer national title in Division 2 of the NCCAA last year, I believe.

RE: America's 25 Worst Colleges
I would be curious to know how they define "return on investment" and how they calculate it. I would suspect that in today's economic climate, a high percentage of all students enrolled in American colleges and universities will not be better off financially in the long run for having attended them. And further, I suspect that in the future that percentage will grow, not decline.

One argument for attending anyway might be that at least it keeps many of them out of the job market for a while, helping to keep unemployment rates looking better.

I've also known and known of people who went to Pensacola Christian. It's beyond conservative, but truly fundamentalist. Compared to this school, Liberty looks like Berkeley. From what I understand, credits to and from there transfer on a school-to-school basis, but it's not easy.

Since they are not accredited by the regional accrediting body, they may not have been on the radar for this list.

Honestly, and not speaking of Montavello specifically, I had no idea that most of the schools mentioned existed, and am even more mystified at how enough students out there are aware of their existence to enroll and keep them in business.
