Political neutrality would be nice, and maybe it can happen on campus during our lifetimes, but for the time being, conservative professors are quite a rare breed. On the other hand, most colleges, liberal and conservative, find athletics to be a unifying factor. Even at Berkeley they love their Bears. It would be a great thing if we ever could see that happen again at Arlington.

I thought we were making some progress in basketball during the Cross years. From year to year, the attendance was steadily improving, especially as the teams became more competitive. I wonder what, if any, input President Karbhari had in the decision to let Cross go. I suspect he had a hands-off attitude, and allowed AD Jim Baker to make that decision. Or, more to his credit, perhaps President Karbhari watched in bemused shock.

For sure, the possibility of football has been continually tied to whatever progress we made in getting fans to attend basketball games, so the sacking of Cross was at least a gamble, and at worst a strategic blunder. I just wonder how much of that move had anything to do with Karbhari.

I think mr. K was supportive of the sports programs. there have been some of new hires and there has been more money to spend and some facilities have been upgraded. adding football just wasnt one of his priorities. as a uta alum (B.S.Architecture) and longtime supporter and donor, it certainly is depressing to me to see so many small "cheesy" schools raise their sports programs over the years while uta mostly treads water. IMHO

If you can't understand my post, forget football. I would go way out on a limb and bet that a president with texas roots would want football on campus more than someone from India. I know, a crazy bet but I will take it.

With a name like Karbhari, I can understand you not having football. Think you may have better luck with a Texas made president.

Ouch! That comment was certainly a thread killer. Really, it's not about Karbhari's origins (engineering) or his leadership style (dominant dictatorial). The whole point of this line of discussion is the reluctance of a series of UTA presidents to reverse the 1985 decision to end football at Arlington. The backward looking ones are all about fiscal issues and a perceived lack of fan support.

I'm waiting for us to have a forward looking president who will see the as-yet unplumbed depths of community and alumni support that will result from a viable football program. UTA 1985 was not the same as UTA 2020. We're now the third largest university in Texas and should at least have athletics comparable to our peer institutions at Houston, Texas Tech, Texas State, North Texas and UTSA.

Oh, he's gone. We're all gone. I hope everybody will get back within the next couple of months. Graduation, student elections, new President, football and life itself all seem to be on hold. I'm optimistic long term, and for now, it's good to hear from the other Sun Belters. It's too bad we lost the spring sports and the basketball tournaments. Some of those things can never be re-done, like the lost high school proms and graduations.

Just keep on keeping on and Blessings to you all!
