RE: 2020 Transfers...
According to the Verbal Commits website, Tarleton State RS Freshman guard Jason Makayabo is transferring. Looking like BCG is reorganizing the roster now.

Ended up transferring to Arizona. Second SU player to leave for high major as a grad transfer under Hayford. Brown was awesome to have, wish SU accomplished more with him. Local guy who found lots of success as a RedHawk, need more of that.

RE: 2020 Transfers...
Mark Pope keeps taking his players away from Utah Valley's roster to build his BYU roster... Jake Toolson... Wyatt Lowell... Richard Harward... Spencer Johnson... now Brandon Averette is transferring to BYU. Poor Mark Madsen.

I wonder if we underestimate the difficulty of coaching at UVU. BYU used to have Ricks College (now BYU-Idaho) where a lot of football players would play for their first two years. With the easing of transfer rules, UVU is starting to look like a developmental team for BYU.

I hope that Madsen is able to develop a program there. But it must be really frustrating for him and the entire Athletic Department.

Utah Valley is looking more like a feeder college before BYU ever since Mark Pope took the job there. Prior to that, Utah Valley was just a school where BYU, Utah, and Utah State rejects landed. The Utah schools seem to like cannibalizing each others's rosters; with the better players moving up the basketball food chain and the bench warmers landing where they might get playing time. Utah Valley might need to recruit players outside the immediate area and with no (family or coaching) ties to the other Utah schools.

Mark Pope coached at UVU one little year ago and is simply recruiting the kids he coached. In 3-4 years, if he is still picking off UVU players, you may have a point. I think we need to slow our roll with the “UVU needs to recruit players outside the immediate area” talk.

He is killing UVU. It is one thing to lose your coach, it is another thing to lose your talent to the same coach. Jake Toolson was first team All-WCC for BYU. Wyatt Lowell was a four star recruit that has only played one year. He still has three years of eligibility left. Averette was the second leading scorer and the leading scorer transferred to USC. Madsen is going to have to ask each recruit if they can give him one good year before they transfer to Pope.

RE: 2020 Transfers...
Freshman Dovydas Pinskus is transferring from Seattle U. Played in 8 games for Redhawks this season.

Hayford is bringing in a lot of transfers this year, as he has in the past, but only two seniors on the roster next year as of now. This group will be the make it or break it squad for Hayford in my opinion over the next 2-3 years

RE: 2020 Transfers...
I think Jim Hayford is primarily a offensive minded coach. He was hired at Seattle U. at the same time NMSU hired Chris Jans but Hayford's basketball philosophy hasn't made as big an impact on winning at Seattle U as Jans has made at NMSU. Up to this point, I haven't been overly impressed with the quality of Seattle's defense. Hayford's man-to-man defensive concepts seem to relies more on a players individual abilities than any fundamental techniques played as a team. And, in the past, Hayford seems comfortable resorting to using generic 2-3 or 3-2 zones from time-to-time. If Hayford's team can put up points (75-plus a game), they are very dangerous. But if their offense is bogged down, Seattle's defense doesn't appear to be able to carry the day.

Hayford recruiting has been all across the board; from recruiting a number of D1 transfers to going heavy on a number of foreign born players. I can't tell if he recruits for need or if he simply signs the best players he can find. This recruiting class, Hayford has gone more heavy on JC transfers; signing three players (5'10 Darrion Trammell, 6'4 Nate Robinson, and 6'6 Emeka Udenyi) from City College of San Francisco and most recently one player (6'1 Angelo Stuart) from Mineral Area CC. Interestingly enough all four players come from JC programs which put up a lot of points offensively (CCSF averaged 101.7 ppg, and Mineral Area CC averaged 94.0 ppg). But we will see what level of defensive intensity Hayford will demand using these offensive minded JC players. I do think all four will play a major part in Seattle's success this upcoming season. Trammell and Stuart have the potential to be good floor generals for Hayford; Robinson will be a three point marksman; and Udenyi looks to be an undersized workhorse at the power forward position.

SU has lived and died with scoring under Hayford, if they can't score they cant win, period. But when they're able to score, even just one or two of their main guys in their stride, they can best anyone. Hayford definitely focuses on offense and scoring. At EWU, Tyler Harvey led the NCAA in ppg and 3-pointers made under Hayford's offense.

Definitely replenishing scorers to replace Terrell Brown, Delante Jones, and Morgan Means.

I'm excited about incoming freshman Kobe Williamson too (6'8 210 F Australia). Had offers from DePaul, Cal Baptist, Hawaii, UC Santa Barbara, and UC Riverside.

Lol, well it did take 5 seasons for Dollar to hit 52 wins (Hayford's total at SU). Dollar had some exciting players but at best was a .500 team in a much weaker WAC at the time worthy of the CBI. Hayford has already surpassed Dollar in my opinion

Hayford's first group of guys, the grad transfers Hearlihy, Gittens, Hill and Dollar's guys like Kavas, Menzies did very well with 20-wins, highest since rejoining D1 fully.

The next group with transfers like Myles Carter, Terrell Brown, Morgan Means, Delante Jones showed flashes of greatness, but largely were plagued by inconsistent play and injuries. Carter and Brown were both better than expected but overall this group disappointed.

I'm impressed by this new group though, and word is there will be a new style of offense implimented this season

According to verbal commits website, big man Raimon Burt Jr. is also transferring from Tarleton State. This leave Gillispie with only three players taller than 6'5 on his roster, 6'7 Gaffney, 6'8 Ngalamulume, and 6'8 Redd. Looks like the Texans will be playing small ball this season.

BCG literally just offered a 2022 5'6" G from Texas. You read that right: a 5'6" Guard. I have to believe he is banking on these kids to grow. Hicks and Madimba are only 17/18, both could easily be 6'6 - 6'7 by their sophmore season. Hicks is a big body 6'5 G with handles and a deep shot, he is going to play all over the court. Speed and versatility is gonna be the name of the game.

On the first read I thought you meant "grow" as in maturity, skills, experience. Fine, of course.

Then I read again and it sounds like you're literally expecting inches, plural. Come on man, I know Stephenville's got a great municipal water supply but I don't think it can do that for them.

Growing an inch or two as a freshman is not that uncommon. In rare cases, much more than that. Rodman was 5'9 after graduating high school, by sophmore year in college he was 6'8

Kid better be on that Nate Robinson level...

Its actually 2023, not 2022. So the kid has some time to grow.

Growing an inch or two as a freshman is not that uncommon. In rare cases, much more than that. Rodman was 5'9 after graduating high school, by sophmore year in college he was 6'8

Its rare a boy (young man) will grow more than an inch or two after the age of 18. But in some rare cases they can have a significant growth spurt.

The Admiral David Robinson was only 5'9 after his Junior year of high school (age 16). After his Senior year of high school (age 17), he had grown to 6'6 and signed to play at the Naval Academy. At the time, the Naval Academy had a height restriction of 6'6 to be a midshipmen. However, by the time Robinson showed up at Annapolis (age 18) he was 6'7 and required a waiver to enter the Academy. The waiver was given with the assumption he would not grow any further. However, by the start of his Sophomore year at Navy (age 19), he grew to 7'0. He finally topped out at 7'1 at the end of his Senior year (age 21). Because of Robinson's size, he never serve on a Naval ship. So, David Robinson essentially grew 16-inches in just over a five year span.

Back in the 1980's NMSU had a player named Johnny Roberson from San Antonio, TX who was only 6'4 as a HS senior when he signed with NMSU. By the time he showed up on campus his freshmen year, he had grown to 6'8. He didn't grow any further but he turned out to be a very good forward for NMSU. His son Andre Roberson (who was born in Las Cruces, NM) currently plays in the NBA for the Oklahoma Thunder. So, it is possible (not probable) that some of Gillispie's signees could grow a few inches by the time they put on a Texan uniform and thereafter.
