Tamar Slay couldn't defend against a 7th grader. I remember after the game, KSU's third win against them that year, one of the Marshall players being quoted in the paper as saying, "I still think we have a better team".

To change the subject a bit ... but still in the same vein. What Kent State game sticks out in your mind from over the years?

I can't recall the date, but it was a rare Sunday night MAC TV game when Kent played a really good Marshall team at Marshall. And The Herd pulled out all the stops for that one, filled the arena and everything.

One of Marshall's better teams, too, with Slay, Van Hoose, Jackson and a couple of other guys I can't remember.

Huffman got in foul trouble early and Whorton-Vaughn struggled all game with Van Hoose.

The only thing that kept the game close was Haut with a couple of threes and Massey, who scored just nine points with nine rebounds.

But those nine points were three dunks, each coming every time it looked like Marshall was about to pull away, and a late-game 3-pointer that helped to send the game into OT. I swear it was the best game Massey ever played.

In OT, Huffman and Warren - who always had his way against Van Hoose - took over. I remember the TV camera kept showing Waters, not on the bench but kind of sitting casually on the edge of the scorers table while Kent pulled away for the win. Like he knew what was coming.

If you recall, talent-wise, those Marshall teams were double-barrell loaded. But that game convinced me Kent BB was special, no matter who was on the other team.

Should have taped that game, but I didn't.

But since then, I always think Kent has a chance to win, against anybody.

It’s pretty cool that you all remember those days. I definitely do. I am John Whorton. I did have moments where vanhoose got the best of me. All those dang on screens they set for him, unbelievable. E Haut wasn’t playing with us at the time though. Never actually played on the court with him. He came mid year of 99-00 season to replace a player that had left. Love E Haut, but never played with him. Killed him in practice though. Attack 22. Pope

I appreciate you all chiming in about me. I was just talking to Ed the other day and told him about this thread. He appreciated The Godfather off Kent state basketball title. We both got a kick out of it. We are often forgot for our sacrifice because of successes after us. I celebrate all of those successes, and are proud Of the culture that we helped build. You all are awesome.

If it wasn't Haut, it was probably Meers. My bad. Still a great game, and one of many games that triggered Kent's current run. Love Norvell, too. Another big memory was when team was introduced after earning first NCAA Tournament bid, at the student center, I believe. When Norvel's name was called all the players chanted 'Ali, Ali.'

There is no 20-year run w/o Norvell.

MAN WAS I WRONG ...

It took a bit for me to track it down, but that game was in 2001, the year after John Whorton graduated. I could not find a box score, but that game was on a Sunday and did go into overtime. Post guys in that game were Mike Perry (man where is he these days), John Edwards and Warren. Also, Haut was on that team as well, not Meers.

Kent won, 68-65 , swept Marshall that season and finished one game ahead of Marshall in the final standings. Then won MAC Tournament.

One of the more memorable games specifically with JW & the KSU basketball program in general was the 2000 NIT win over Villanova. I attended the game at Nova & the Flashes totally outhustled the Wildcats. Outcoached the Wildcats as well.

And this win was after the Flashes defeated Rutgers at the MACC.

Another memorable game for me was the Bracketbuster win at St. Mary's. What a game Al Fisher had.

Fisher was a throwback to being a true 'scorer.' He was not much of a 3-point shooter at all (but don't tell Akron that!) but he knew how to put the ball through the hoop either with acrobatic drives, or mid-range pull-ups.

Of little note is the fact he had the perfect cast around him with Q-Scott-Singletary-Mincy. He had free run with that bunch to score at will.

John Whorton was one of my all time favorites. He developed himself from first year to graduation more than any one I can remember. He game to us as a kid, but left as a man. He ended up with a chiseled body with a good motor. His post footwork was obviously developed with much practice. Had a great drop step and under as it was required when playing taller players who played above the rim. John was more valuable than most people know. Waters loved him.
One of my favorite trips was first round NCAA Tourney at the Fleet Center in Boston. First round was against Temple. They were good, but they had seven players on the floor all game long. We stayed at the same hotel as the officials. After several drinks, I was brave enough to confront one of them and shall we say, made a scene. Still a great trip.

Wouldn't it be great if Whorton could mentor KBennett. Autism aside, they seem to have a lot of the same physical atributes/abilities. I wonder if KB even knows Whorton's back story as an over-weight freshman who took the barbs from his teammates who called him 'Pope' (think Friar Tuck) after Norvell called him 'fat as a pope' and used that as fuel to make himself a real player as a soph/jr/sr.

His teammates celebrated with Whorton when he had the 'Pope' tattoo put on his bicep. Whorton was one of the first of many inside Kent State basketball stories that tie the last 20 years of the program together.

Hey John, welcome to the board. You were a couple years before I started watching Kent so unfortunately all my knowledge of your game is second hand. I was probably at a Gary Waters summer basketball camp when you were there, but I was too young to know who any of the players were. I just remember I thought most of them were probably NBA players lol. I'm sure I speak for everyone on here when I say if you've got any old war stories you feel like sharing we'd love to hear them. Especially now since we have no sports to entertain us!

I was courtside when Al hit the game winner against the zippers. Place went dead silent. man, he needs to get back on campus. Why doesnt our esteemed AD bring the MBB team back individually? We need these men being the host of the auction. Not a football player who won less games than he has fingers in collegiate career. Celebrate greatness!

To be fair, that NFL player played 8 years in the NFL, 99 NFL games, and won a super bowl. I don't think Kent fans should have a problem celebrating him either.

Touche. He had a great career. I was off he had 17 wins in his career.

I was solo in the end zone, upper deck. My partner in crime ditched me that evening. What a game. Remember how hot Jeremiah Wood got? Damn. Big lead at half. I remember stepping out for fresh air and talking a little trash.
