Would a 4 or 6 team conference playoff work in an 18-24 member Mega Conference?
What are everyone’s thoughts on Mega Conferences that have 18-24 members and either a 4 or 6 team playoff?
Examples:
18 teams, 3 divisions of 6, 4 team playoff w/ 1 wildcard
20 teams, 4 divisions of 5, 4 team playoff w/ 0 wildcards
20 teams, 4 divisions of 5, 6 team playoff w/ 2 wildcards
24 teams, 3 divisions of 8, 4 team playoff w/ 1 wildcard
24 teams, 3 divisions of 8, 6 team playoff w/ 3 wildcards
24 teams, 4 divisions of 6, 6 team playoff w/ 2 wildcards

So these would be conference playoffs prior to the CFP?
12-game regular season + 2-3 conference playoff games + 2 CFP games = 16-17 total games.
I don't think it'd happen but I'd like it!

My thoughts are, in a world where there are two big time conferences, their champs will meet in a national title game—they might not be able to call it that but it would function as such.

With university presidents in charge there's only so many college football games they will agree to. Maybe they can do two round 4 team conference playoffs and then a final four but they will never agree to two round playoffs and a final eight.

If there are basically 2 conferences you still keep 4 divisions no matter if we 4 divisions of 8, or 4 divisions of 7, or 4 divisions of 6.
So the final upper tier would have either 48, 56, or 64 schools, and I'm betting if we go to two "Leagues" that it will be more likely to be 56.
But not matter which happens you would have 4 division winner facing each other in the "League" semis and then the finals.
The two champs play for the national championship.
That amounts to an 8 team playoff. That's as good as it will get. The motivation is that the two leagues would have more negotiating leverage for the carriage of their sports and they would keep the proceeds from the sale of the semis and finals. The championship game would be split evenly.
