RE: Bryce Drew to GCU
Odd fit IMO, but I thought Bryce was an odd fit at Vanderbilt too. He has zero West Coast ties, but it is a job that you could probably win a lot at given its resources, location and fan support.

Personally, I probably would have gone with Marvin Menzies instead. He was incredibly successful at New Mexico State (more than Drew was at Valparaiso), and was not as under-performing at UNLV as Drew was at Vanderbilt. Menzies at least had two winning seasons at UNLV, where as Drew had 16 combined conference wins in three years (including an 0'fer in his last season).

RE: Bryce Drew to GCU
This is a head-scratcher.

As a long-time Vanderbilt fan, it was painful watching the Drew-coached teams. No toughness. No chemistry. We lost Darius Garland at the start of the 2018-19 season, which killed any chance of at least an NIT bid. But the VU coaching staff is to be blamed, to an extent, for not successfully recruiting to allow for a better roster balance in terms of positions. When Garland went out, Vandy had only two conventional scholarship backcourt players on the roster. That will not get it done in the SEC.

Having said all that, I though Bryce was a solid hire at the beginning of the process. A good age. Had head coaching experience. Played in the NBA. From Indiana (near Nashville). But it was a complete disaster.

Drew did well at Valparaiso. Perhaps he'll do well at Grand Canyon. I wish him well.

Was it even necessary to make a hire now? Recruiting is in the tank for everyone, the coaching carousel is barely creaking at this point and there's really nothing lost by holding back a bit until we have a better handle on how this thing is going to impact the offseason, and potentially next season.

I would have thought GCU could buy a better coach than Drew, but they probably know something I don't.

We're talking about a WAC school, they're lucky to get anyone we've actually heard of. Can anyone here name New Mexico State's head coach without looking it up? Bryce Drew isn't that bad, he did take Vandy to the NCAA Tournament before.

Bryce Drew is going to get an entire coaching career out of his One Shining Moment, isn't he?

For those of you who were too young or not yet born at the time:

I think Bryce settled. I'm sure if he took his time he could have found a better job.

Good/God for him. At least he got a gig this week and not furloughed like my sister in law from Marriott as she was employed as a convention manager at the Gaylord Palms in Orlando

Stallings was mildly successful over all those years at Vandy, although he was no Eddie Fogler. Stallings had the big Australian guy, which helped.

I’m surprised Drew flamed out there, he seemed like a great fit on paper.

One year. You can credit the NCAA appearance at Vandy to his predecessor but Bryce did make two NCAA Tournaments at Valpo as well. He has proven he can coach at the Horizon League level. That's way higher than WAC level.

The head coach at NMSU is Chris Jans, one of the best coaches in the country. I didn't have to look that up. There are a lot of good coaches around D1 college basketball that no one has heard of. The WAC has its share of good coaches. Rick Croy at CBU and Jim Hayford at Seattle are good coaches. UVU had a good one for four seasons in Mark Pope, until he left for BYU. Pope made the semi-final list for national coach of year in his first season at BYU.

Bryce Drew was 124-49 at Valpo. He was three times Coach of the Year in the Horizon League and won four regular season titles in five years at Valpo. He made the tournament twice. His brother, Scott, is the current Big 12 Coach of the Year and the likely national coach of the year. His father is in the College Hall of Fame for his coaching career with 640 wins. Bryce Drew had one disastrous season at Vanderbilt. It happens but it doesn't mean he can't coach.

Plus, Drew has street cred as a player. He was Mr. Indiana in high school basketball, an All-American in college and first round draft pick in the NBA. GCU has a $5.3 million dollar basketball budget, state-of-the-art basketball facilities and in 2018-2019 averaged 7,170 fans per game, which was the fullest venue in college basketball in 2018-2019 with a percent capacity of 102.42%. GCU basketball is ready to take off, they just need a good basketball coach. I think Bryce Drew is that guy.
