Coach Siddle on NC Sports Network
Caught the end of Siddle's interview on The Patrick Johnson Show, luckily the UNCW basketball twitter account had some quotes...

"I'm not really talking to them (the players) much about basketball right now. It's more important to build relationships and to get to know them."

"I met Coach Keatts when I was 18 years old. From the day that I met him, we had great chemistry. He's helped me grow. I'm forever indebted to Coach."

"When you take over a job, especially with the high expectations, it's important to doing every day well. My top priority is our guys right now."

"I like the makeup of the roster. We have some really good pieces. Our bread and butter will be playing with four guards and a power forward. We want to score a lot of points."

"I'm excited about Shykeim Phillips. He's taylor made for what we want to do. I'm excited about his growth and development and can't wait to work with him."

"When we recruited Devontae (Cacok) we saw a special talent. He was a great person and he never wavered from that. He made a commitment to his body and working on his game. You can't teach what he brings to the table."

"Imajae Dodd is a great kid. He has a tremendous upside. The sky's the limit for Imajae. I'm very excited about working with him."

"Our program is going to be build on toughness. In order to be tough, you have to do tough things every day. My goal is to make these guys tougher on daily basis."

"The season is long. We'll ease into it. Our individual and team workouts will be challenging, but I don't want to throw too much at them too early."

Sounds like a good interview, however, on critique, if he's going to talk about 1 or 2 players, talk about them all. Although we all probably a gree with his statements(i do), you don't want the players that he didn't mention to get to "what about me"?

I'm curious how he's building relationships with the players while they're in quarantine status?

The Patrick Johnson Show is out of Greenville and he asked about those players specifically since they're from the area.

4 guards and a power forward is the deal according to the new headcoach. If I am a small forward this is worst case scenario and this roster has a couple of these guys.

Two things...

I agree there could be some writing on the wall type stuff there. I'd also say some of the guards may want to work heavily on their scoring abilities in order to not get recruited over and/or lose significant playing time. I still think we're in a really good spot with Siddle's approach and while it may be slightly concerning switching "styles" again... at least we have an identity he's preparing for as well as I don't think it will take him long to implement it.

Additionally, you'll notice I edited your post above. It was only to include the closing bracket "]" to close that quote up.

Small Forward is an outdated position label. I find it highly unlikely that his quote on 4 guards/1 PF will deter any of our players. If anyone it would be Linssen.

4 Guards is a loose definition. He just means athletic guys who can run and score. Doesn't mean they can't be 6'5, 6'6

Exactly. We have a couple of guys who fit that mold that I think could thrive in Siddle’s system. Most notably Jaylen Sims.

He's exactly who i was thinking of when i made that statement, and a guy like CJ when KK was here.

Boggs seems like he would remain a really good fit in a program that values athleticism, speed and a higher percentage from deep shots, along with others already mentioned in the interview due to where they’re from as GM stated.

If you look back at Keatts the guards have to all be able to hit the three and score. He put Talley on the back burner in favor of Ingram, simply because Ingram was a better scorer and three point shooter His power forward had to rebound and be athletic enough to defend at the back of the press.

IMO, this puts Phillips, Okauru, Gadsden and Estime at the front of the line at guard. It also puts Dodd in front of Linssen at the 5. If Siddle needs scholies to land some of the guards he has offered and another transfer big , I could see him not renewing some of the current players. He's going to shoot to make a quick rebound to the top of the CAA and he's going to need a pretty big roster shift to make it happen.

I don't necessarily agree with the last part of that statement. We saw what good coaching did with that roster that was depleted by year end. You add a few good pieces and good coaching i think he could win now without a complete over haul.
CG i agree with you about Boggs. He could fit nicely too. Not sure why i always forget about him.

I’d have Sims over Estime. Estime hasn’t shown the capability to score off the dribble consistently. He’d be a great bench piece though. I see Sims as a true slasher in Siddle’s system. No more settling for 3s like he was this past season.

Personally, I think Sims needs a lot of work handling the ball in order to become a high value as a slasher. He does have good value as a lengthy defender in the middle of a pressing defense.

I will take him at his word and he said 4 guards. That tells me they have to be able to handle the ball against pressure from a guard. It could be 6-5 or 6-2 but you have to handle the ball and score. If you are a guy that can't guard a ball handler that also might not fit your style of play. Not gonna list any particular players but it is cause for concern and I see it as a think about it type statement from the new head coach.

Where do you see Boggs playing in a 4-1 type offense? The big question is halfcourt defense, teams will go small to combat this and you have to be able to guard the dribble drive. Boggs is at least 6-8 and maybe 6-9,long and thin.

He could be the 4th guy in those smaller lineups

Exactly he has the length to still play in an athletic pressing defense, rebound and the ability to shoot the ball better than some of our guards. So quickly people forget that Cacok wasn’t a monster as a freshman. If he can get Boggs to put on some pounds and commit himself to getting strong he could flourish in a Siddle style.
