The difference just might be that Birmingham got over 3½ inches of rain over the last 3 days and Pensacola just received around ½" over the same time period.
The Pensacola tournament was scheduled 6 months ago with teams traveling from out of town. The situation with UAB at Regions is complete nonsense. I'm not sure if it's Barons or Shoop calling the shots? What happens at downtown football stadium in several years if it rains the day before a UAB home game. Is the game moving to Legion Field or UAB soccer field? It's the same situation. But folks on the board are saying situation at Regions is unique or UAB fans don't support program so everything is OK. Apparently Pensacola baseball stadium also hosts high school football.

It is not the same. Your talking field turf compared to a grass surface. Your talking Barons are the main focus for Regions while UAB will be for Protective.

Hate to tell ya, I’ve tried logic with this group on this matter and it just doesn’t work.

RE: UAB baseball season opener
Pro baseball games don't get cancelled because nobody felt it necessary to go tarp the field before the game. Have you heard of a Braves or a Barons game getting cancelled because of that when the weather is nice the day of the game? There is no reason that this should have happened. I know most people here are all about football and basketball and don't give a rip about Blazer baseball but some of us do and we realize that the program could be in much better shape if they could promote the games at RF and bring in larger gate revenues. The Barons averaged 5400 per game and the vast majority of those people don't even know what league the Barons play in or where they are in the standings. UAB could sell lots of tickets to their weekend games there when the weather is nice. I hate seeing these missed opportunities to better the program especially when there is no reason for it.

You can not tarp the whole baseball field. The out field would have been destroyed playing some of those games after all that rain. Regions first priority is giving the Barons the best place to play NOT UAB. Given UAB the option to play some games at Regions is a bonus to us. I would much rather spend the money to upgrade YMF but that just isn't happening. For now we have to take what we can get and thankfully the barons organization has been willing to work with us when they could easily tell us to go kick rocks.

You don't have to tarp the outfield to make the field playable plus the Barons didn't need the field for 2 months after UAB played that series. The field could have been made playable for UAB without negatively impacting the Barons.

Our last game at Regions is March 31st. The Barons open up their season a week later. Not 2 months.
When you get 25"+ of rain in a few months span you can not make it "playable" without damaging the field and then having to pay to fix that. So UAB did the smart thing and played on our own field that way if there was damage the cost to fix wouldn't come out of the baseball/athletic department budget to fix. Come on man at least attempt to think about this logically.
We own absolutely ZERO when it comes to Regions field and we are getting to play our games there for practically nothing

Question about logic. How often have you seen a field destroyed or damaged from a baseball game? I have seen a number of fields damaged in football. There is a big difference between 22 players sliding around on the turf every play versus 3 guys running around the outfield maybe having to dive at most 3 times in an entire game. The biggest problem in baseball comes from an outfielder standing in one spot over multiple games. If you go back to the days the Barons played at Hoover Met. Events like the SEC baseball tournament were never considered a threat to destroy the field. Rain has been an issue this year. But games have been moved to Young with little or no rain in past seasons. A second question comes to mind and I do not know the answer. Maybe Shoop would just rather play at Young so is he making those calls?
