Siena had a chance to get him last season when Jamion Christian left unexpectedly. I think they wanted somebody a little higher-character, especially after taking having taken a risk on Jimmy Patsos that didn’t pan out. Kept it in-house by promoting the assistant head coach, a Siena alum and local AAU product. Seemed to work so far, won the regular season before the tourney was canceled. We might come to kick ourselves if Pitino can still win at Iona. It’s a true battle of good against evil.

As somebody who follows/cheers for various men's basketball programs that have employed historically and collectively lots of crooked coaches ... well, I guess I should simply post nothing about this.

College sports has been a moral/ethical cesspool for generations. Iona made a hiring decision based purely on (anticipated) W’s and L’s. More power to them.

Iona is in New Rochelle, where the Corona containment zone is. Coincidence? I think not!

UNLV should be where SDSU is now. They have the arena, location and history but have made bad coaching hires. Same for New Mexico.

Good for Iona.

Good for Iona.

SDSU took a chance on a basketball coach with NCAA sanctions in his past and it worked out well for them. UNLV probably doesn't want to do that because of their own history of run-ins with the NCAA.

Pitino will be there, absolute max, three or four seasons. I understand why Iona would shrug and roll the dice with him, but I don't think not hiring him is the kind of decision that could haunt anyone in the MAAC as a long-term thing. This is image rehab before he goes somewhere where he can feel like he retired on his own terms.

Agreed.

Still waiting on punishment for Arizona, Louisville, etc in the 2017 Adidas scandal. Three people were convicted and sent to jail 17 months ago.

Nothing. Nada. Zip. The NCAA is telling us that cheating will not be punished.

I can't stand Rick Pitino. He is a NY blowhard. Annoying as hell. obviously personally immoral. However, I don't think for one second he condones cheating of any kind in his programs. Some goes on everywhere, including Louisville, but not to the degree it does at the one and done schools.

As far as I know, NC State and Kansas are the only schools that have received N.O.A. from the NCAA. Assistant coaches at Arizona, Auburn, Oklahoma State and U.S.C. were also implicated. Six schools were expected to receive allegations last fall. Louisville + Kansas + NC St + the 4 schools above = 7 schools. Wonder who's going to skate?

Hopefully the Nike and Under Armour schools receive their comeuppance as well so that the scum can be eliminated from the sport and I can bring myself to watch it again. Haven't really cared since the Calipari/one and done fiasco became prevalent. So obvious this sport is a fraud.

The other day I got a LinkedIn message from a college recruiter reaching out about Grand Canyon's Online MBA, no GMAT required. I'm sure that's some Booth-level education going on there in Arizona.

Since reading this post, I have been trying to think of some human endeavor that isn't a moral/ethical cesspool. I'm still thinking. What we decry in college sports is often the same kind of behavior that we applaud - or at least justify - in most of our free market economy. So that cesspool is inhabited mainly by - US. Go for it, Iona.
