Bad execution. This might have been a makeup for not hiring him before, but that time has passed.

As a Seahawk alum and season ticket holder, maybe you can help remind all the students that “despise” Keatts what Trask Coliseum was like when the program won 72 games, 3 CAA Regular Season Championships, and back to back tournaments was like.

I took my family to all of those games when he was in high school. We were at the bracket release event, and we hated it when Keatts left. I wasn't a fan of the McGrath hire, but we wanted to give him a chance. Burke revived a lot of passion in the fans, especially the students. Again, it's the timing. If you were sitting here with kids who have no clue when or if they will be able to return to their university life and are just processing that only to learn a coach that they came to love because he is so involved with the students is under quarantine for COVID19 and he and the players just find out through Twitter that he is fired, you would see how it's another gut punch.

Well good thing we hired Takayo Siddle, NOT Kevin Keatts. Siddle wanted the job after Keatts left and STILL wanted the job now despite not being selected previously. I hope the students give him a fair chance because it is clear he likes UNCW and knows what it takes to be successful here.

I know. He should have gotten it then. He is probably a good hire, but the handling of it was botched.

The students will be fine. That is a total overreaction. Welcome back to Wilmington Coach Siddle!

Basketball hires are done by committee. Bass has input but he isn't an authoritarian making the decision on his own. Not sure what the quarantine has to do with the hire, but whatever. Siddle had the edge on recruiting IMO, as well as relationships with big donors formed when Keatts was here and a style of ball that was very successful.

I am confident Siddle will put a team on the floor that plays hard in the Run/Defend/Win fashion of Keatts. And if he can recruit at a level that equals his reputation we could make a quick turnaround from the McGrath era.

I was a Burke fan, but when Siddles name popped up I was good with either selection. I'd be surprised if THAT many students have a big problem with Keatts and NCSU since the vast majority rarely went to games.

If your child is a player, it’s disappointing he heard from national writers what the decision was as has been discussed multiple times through this thread...unfortunately in today’s time social media has a mind of its own no matter the topic. If your child is not a player or manager and Takayo Siddle being hired is a gut punch to you all, then take a hard look at things in today’s world.

Actually, my kid has a chronic medical condition that will probably prevent him from returning to campus unless this drastically improves, so he actually DOES know quite a bit about the knocks the world can give you. Sports are a nice distraction from the real world, especially for college students who are already stressed. Don't worry. I'll leave you guys alone here. I love UNCW. I met my wife there. We made our home in Wilmington. We took our three kids to games since they were old enough to remember, and I was so proud when my son chose UNCW, even though it was "home." I wish Siddle well. It's been a rough week.

Agree it has been a tough week for lots of folks and probably going to be worse before it gets better. Hopefully after the initial shock of an announcement today, everyone will rally around Siddle and this team.

I've done the same with my kids so we're on the same team. Burke was definitely a fan favorite and on this board. I trust that decisions were made with the long term perspective of a winning program. Burke was given the opportunity to make a name for himself and i'm sure he's thankful. He jumped ahead of two other coaches in being given that chance. I think this will produce better opportunities for him in the future since he was able to sit in the drivers seat and change results. If you asked him, i'll guarantee he is very thankful for the opportunity and is going to implore the kids to support Siddle and stay on board.

UNCW basketball set to hire Takayo Siddle as next coach
Well. There we have it. We have a new HC! Welcome Coach Siddle and I’m behind this 110% as I am with every new hire we’ve made.

He is quite capable of putting a great team on the floor, regardless of who’s stays or goes. There will be players that stay and likely a some who don’t (though I hope he convinces all of them to stay). He has all the qualities to get players excited, and regardless of personal opinions of Keatts and how he left UNCW, he was probably a great HC to learn from for Siddle.

I do hope we get back to the “Run, Defend, Win” with some improvement on the “defend” from both the McGrath and Keatts era. Personally, I would label Keatts system more as “Run, Steal, Win” as I wasn’t a huge fan of our defense once a team broke the press. That’s neither here nor there at this point though.

Welcome back to UNCW Coach Siddle and let’s get back to championship basketball!!

I hope he is going to be able to recruit because being on Keatts staff has not exposed him to X and O's. Keatts is a great dude and recruiter but a very poor bench coach. I hope Jimmy will allow him to hire so experienced help and they guys he wants. IMO very average hire that is as much as Bass being comfortable having a guy who is his guy and not upstage him

I guess the hashtag for this season is #RunDefendWin2 per UNCW Basketball Twitter account.

I agree, let’s hope 2 represents 2x more focus on defend.

Again, curious to see what kind of improvements Siddle makes now that he has the keys.

LMAO! Get a grip. I am blown away that news spreads on social media prior to anything being official for one...that never happens LOL!!! The kids are going to be ok and you conveniently left out Estime’s tweet in response telling him everything was going to be fine. Jeff Goodman and the writers across the country do this with every hiring/firing. If you read this board for 2 minutes, it’s easy to see your disdain for Bass, Siddle, Keatts etc., get over it!
You are full of $hit, I've ALWAYS given Bass the benefit of the doubt, he's done some solid things at UNCW. You must be confusing me with someone else.

I take full responsibility for this and wear it proud! It would take one phone to any player on the team to let the entire team know-they all have team chat groups.

RE: UNCW basketball set to hire Takayo Siddle as next coach
If Siddle is the new coach, we should all get behind him. He was in Rob's shoes a few years back and got snubbled. Hopefully he has really good recruiting contacts to augment what is already a formidable squad. Siddle should know to get a few bigs and another good combo/PG to fill out the roster properly.

As far as X and O's goes, it's up to him but you would think that he's going to go with what has worked for UNCW recently which is a pressing style. The guys already should be used to it after Rob but they need a few guys on the back end of the press that can change things. I do like the deflections rule of 40 per via Keatts and I feel we have guys that can do this already. It should be a decent transition since the team is built for this already for the most part. Good luck Takayo! You are not walking into a bad situation roster wise like McGrath did for sure.

What strikes me at the moment is the consequence of bad decision making.

Bass (or 'the committee') made a decision 3 years ago to take something that was going along successfully and vector it in a new direction , and the results were spectacularly bad. Now -it appears - that bad decision is being made right by going Back to the Future.

The problem is that going Back to the Future means once again taking something that could arguably be said had gone from a disaster to beginning to go along fine and re-vectoring yet again.

And sadly, along the way, a lot of people get hurt.

I hope and expect things to go well under Siddle. But the collateral damage makes me sad.

Not sure what the quarantine has to do with the hire, but whatever. Siddle had the edge on recruiting IMO, as well as relationships with big donors formed when Keatts was here and a style of ball that was very successful.

That's where I am, too. It's also unfortunate how much control Wendell Murphy has over who is coaching UNCW men's basketball since I've learned he was primarily responsible for this. I guess he thinks we are his bush training league for State.

This is about where I am at on it too.

We are once again changing direction and moving away from a known certainty that people like and has a lot of growth potential to an unknown that represents yet another change in direction and culture.

We ran Brownell off in an attempt to change direction and culture and it failed miserably and we paid the price.

When we landed Keatts we had someone who had a clear vision and was in the process of implementing a culture. For whatever reason we abandoned that and again switch directions. Once again we paid the price.

We very very fortunate to have someone with the character, pedigree, and passion like Coach Burke fall in our lap. Despite having been dealt a very difficult situation, it was working and showed signs of potential. Yet we are abandoning it and once again going in a different direction.

I think Siddle should have had the job to begin and we never should have abandoned the culture Keatts was implementing. However, what is done is done.

I am just exhausted by all the hard reboots this program has seen the past 15 years.

I hope Siddle has tremendous success and I do think if you werent going to hire Burke than he was the best choice. I sincerely hope that the Run, Defend, Win culture is the culture we stick with moving forward. If Siddle does find success here and move on to the big money jobs. I hope that we have finally learned our lesson and stick with our identity and not throw darts at the wall blindly
