61,000,000 Americans had it - 13,000 died from it (according to 'the official numbers'

We've had the Swine flu, the Hong Kong flu, the Bird flu now COVID-19. In 3-4 years there will be another vicious strain.

The very young, the very old, and the infirm always make up the bulk of the deaths.

Most people get it or a touch of it and then their immune systems more or less adjust to it - but the common cold and the flu are and will remain the same - you can't cure them you treat the symptoms and these bugs are always changing and mutating which is why we will always have them around.

With the seasonal flu 80% of the deaths were to people over 65. With the Swine flu 80% of the deaths were to people under 65 since older people had antibodies built up. No one has antibodies yet to the MexicanBeerVirus. There likely won't be as many deaths for the Corona because of the measures taken to prevent it which will make people say that they overreacted. Case study might be the Spanish Flu in 1918. Philadelphia had a parade with 200,000 people. 3 days later every bed in every hospital was full and at the end of the week 4500 were dead. St. Louis closed all public gatherings at the same time and had less than half the deaths per capita.

RE: The 'regular' flu
God forbid if we ever see the avian bird flu go airborne,we’d see deaths in epic proportions killing millions world wide...as of right now there are no vaccines to the public which is a big mistake.

As far as the corona virus people are freaking out cause there are no vaccines or not much to battle it but it’s no more deadlier than the regular flu itself from current data...good thing is they say young children are very resilient against it but the scary thing is they can spread it to the parents or grandparents very easily who may not be.

Yeah, and even with vaccines 20k Americans died this past 4 months to the flu. So far we have had 41 deaths due to the coronavirus.

That makes the flu way, way, way worse.

41 deaths and idiots are running around with hazmat suits on.

Now, I understand there is something crazy happening in Italy, good thing we aren't Italians. They somehow screwed up bad. They have a total of 15k cases.. How did their healthcare system get overrun with 15k cases? We had 20k people die (350k hospitalized) from the flu in 4 months and somehow 15k people getting sick overrruns their healthcare system?

Our response has apparently been one of the best in the world.

Yep. Follow the money and who wants to get power. Then you have your answers to the 'pandemic'.

What an asinine statement. The world economy is on the brink of collapse and the stock market has lost over 8,000 points which have resulted in companies losing billions and you say follow the money.

Bet ALCOA will be one of the first companies to recover with all these tin foil hats going around.

The key factor is those with the flu are not contained and freely go about in society infecting more and more as they go.

We have used containment practices to prevent the coronavirus from spreading freely throughout the communities.

From what we do know the r0 factor for the common flu is 1.3 while the r0 factor for Coronavirus is around 2.2. So it seems that it is significantly more contagious than the common flu.

By your numbers that's a 0.05% mortality rate while COVID19 is about a 2% mortality rate. That's a huge difference. If 2% of the people who got the flu died that would be about 20 million deaths. Doesn't it make sense to err on the side of caution until more is known about the virus? It's already mutated once so there are 2 strains out there now with one being worse. What happens if it mutates again to an even deadlier version? Need to flatten the curve before everyone can get on with their lives.

Not to argue. But at this point in the 'life cycle' of COVID19 there are no real reliable statistics. We are told we don't know how many people might have the virus because we can't test. Follow the money. So how can u determine the 'death rate'. Also how many who have died were already severely compromised. From a layman's perspective, ~5000 people's death over the entire globe doesn't seem like an emergency. Especially when ~40K die each month from 'flu like' respiratory issues. Follow the money and power grabbing.

If you “follow the money”, airlines are losing billions, China has lost over a trillion in manufacturing alone, Italy is having to choose who gets respirators between the 65yo and 35yo and cannot take in everyone who needs care.

It is not a conspiracy theory, there is no white board in a doctors office that proves the conspiracy, it is not due to the US elections 03-lmfao. What people run to out of fear of accepting what is true would be funny if it weren’t so sad and damaging to society. The world did not fake a virus so Dems can win or Repubs can scare everyone to stay in power.

We have had 10 deaths to children under the age of 10 in Tennessee alone due to regular flu. That is just terrible, and yet no outrage. If that happened with this new coronavirus we would be losing our minds.

I like that the world is taking action on the coronavirus but we definitely have entered the panic zone on this. IMO it's just another bug that comes up all the time.

Using your logic we should have treated this outbreak the same as we treat the flu since it affects would not be as bad.

But then you acknowledge Italy is in bad shape and say we did a great job preventing an outbreak here.

Which one is it...The flu is worse and we shouldn't have done anything or this is serious and we did a good job preventing it.

What part of there is no vaccine for COVID-19 available yet, do some folks don't get?

WHO and CDC are advising governments around the world to try and contain the spread of this NEW virus to a minimum, until there is a cure or vaccine.

I used the US mortality rate. So at the worldwide rate, the flu would kill almost 37 million people if it had the same mortality rate. People are stuck on the total deaths as the comparison to the flu and that's simply the wrong way to compare the two.

Flu- we have anti-viral meds for it, vaccines that help, and generally know how to treat it.

COVID19- no anti-virals to fight it yet, no vaccine yet, and can only treat symptoms. Twice as contagious as the flu, 10x’s more deadly so far. This is why we try to contain it.

Our Facebook friend hasn’t “figured this out” more than the heads of the CDC and WHO. Generally, medical science is a good thing that we can trust. Essential oil moms and anti-vaxxers are the equivalent to the fools saying “this ain’t no big deal, I’ve had the flu”

Don’t act out of fear, accept facts, make temporary adjustments to slow the spread, and trust medical professionals. Maybe it will die out especially with warmer weather approaching

Nope, if you are going to use math to prove something it has to be applied to both.

350k people in the US were hospitalized and 20k died due to the flu
1800 people in the US have been hospitalized and 41 have died due to coronavirus..

If you want to use the 36mil number, then you have to apply the same math to coronavirus which would be 18mil and only 41 deaths.
