According to this thread on the UNCW site, the tweet, which has been deleted stated that the ref who tested positive worked the Drexel/UNCW game. So this basically effects the entire Drexel team and maybe anyone who participated in the entire tournament.

I haven't seen any information as to whether CAA players are being tested or quarantined.

Interesting article in today's Inquirier about the virus's impact on college sports revenue. Dr. Zillmer is briefly quoted on the article stating that it could cost a school like Drexel in the 6 figures in losses of revenue.

The power conference schools will most likely end up OK from all of this. Sure, they'll lose millions of dollars in revenue, but they do get a lot of money from the national TV contracts. And if the 2020 football season is played, it will help get these schools back on solid footing.

A school like Drexel probably relies quite a bit on that NCAA Division I revenue stream. They don't have football and they don't have much ticket revenue to offset the loss.

I'm really curious if Drexel benefited financially from Denise having her contract bought out. Hopefully, there's a significant bit of revenue there that could help Drexel out a bit.

One way that I think that mid-major schools could help trim expenses is by cutting down on unnecessary travel. It will be interesting to see if Drexel cancels their trip to the Bahama's this fall, or makes adjustments to their OOC schedules to focus more on local games, rather than flying to places like Florida or Texas.

I think you are right trips and OOC will be limited if not cancelled. Drexel put themselves in this situation by not having a football team or going all in on athletics. Even if they had a bad football team it would have still brought revenue to the program. If the basketball team was more supported they would have more revenue to deal with this funding shock.

More revenue and more expenses. Football would be a terrible idea at Drexel and would lose a fortune. I do not see this costing a school like Drexel all that much. The shared NCAA tournament money for an appearance is about it for the mens side. The womens side takes a hit since we might have got a tournament appearance along with JMU. So there is the possibility of 2 lost payments (1 for the 2nd bid and possibly 1 for a win). That money hurts. So his estimations of 6 figures is likely accurate.

In 2019 each unit was 1.67M paid out in 260K increments over 6 years. I forget the breakdown but I know like half goes to the team who earned it and the rest goes into a shared pool for the rest. We would not have earned the bulk from men's so that would have been like 20K or something like that. I can't find numbers for 2019 on what a unit was for the women, but I assume its significantly less. Even if a unit is 20K there is a potential that would be 2 units or more. If we missed the tournament and did the WNIT, obviously we would have paid for home games and brought in additional revenue. So his 6 figures number may have been high but not unreasonable at all.

If Drexel shared Penn stadium equipment isn't that expensive Alumni would have given more to football team than a basketball team.

Even at FCS it is expensive. 63 scholarships is a lot of money. Plus rent for UPenn's stadium. Plus travel all over the east coast for said 63 players plus coaches (typically 10 plus grad assistants). You think we would have enough ticket sales to overcome that? Sorry but people at Drexel don't care much about sports period, I cannot see them selling many tickets for football, either. I have a hard time believing alumni are itching to throw money at football, either.

For kicks:

Operating Expenses:
JMU: 2.73M
Delaware: 949K
W&M: 901K
Towson: 776K

Total Expenses:
JMU: 10.65M
Delaware: 7.84M
W&M: 7.07M
Towson: 4.82M

Let's say we are more in line with Towson. Towson is the lowest operating expense in the CAA and next to last in total expenses. 4.82M is a hefty expense to attempt to cover. Rhode Island has the lowest total expenses at 4.67M. I call bs that football makes sense. There is a reason Hofstra and Northeastern dropped football

we don't need football.

i do agree on the idea that we haven't gone all in with what we do have. we haven't marketed what we have or done much to project it onto campus. i was down for alumni weekend. they had a nice event in the new activity center beforehand. otherwise you wouldn't have known anything was going on.

Football "back in the day" was definitely a money-loser. It was one of the reasons it was discontinued back in the mid-70s. I was a student rep on the Athletics committee. Hardly had any objection outside of the football alumni.. For DU bringing it back would be a money pit. Even Hofstra, which seemed to have a much larger and more supportive following, discontinued several years ago allegedly due to the financials.

I don't see any way there would be a sudden influx of money to the athletics program were football to be brought back.
