But as to the contracts with companies like ESPN most of these games have event insurance. I don't think ESPN goes under after a 9 month hiatus. But I think some marginal football programs might if they aren't compensated. The Tourney cancellation probably has more than a few reconsidering the sports they offer.

The media companies will survive, but what about college programs that won’t get media rights payments? The networks won’t pay for games that don’t happen. They might even ask for money back if they’ve given any league or conference an advance. The Athletic has an article reporting that the Premier League teams will have to return 762 million pounds to broadcasters if they don’t complete the current season.

I smell another push for yet another government bailout. What would the emperor do without circuses?

As long as it happens for small businesses too.

Oh wait, that wasn’t the real question.

You have a lot of good thoughts there.

What sports are going to bounce back the fastest is the question?

Do individual sports like golf and tennis have an edge? Do you need a crowd to enjoy watching a golf tournament? That's really only been part of the atmosphere in recent years.

I definitely think individual sports have the edge. Of course, racing has pit crews and golf has caddies. Bowling doesn’t have anything, save the soul that pours the beer pitchers.

BTW, that Richmond race from ‘86 that was aired on Fox today was phenomenal. NASCAR should take notes, that place was PACKED in cold, rainy weather.

(03-12-2020 08:55 PM)JRsec Wrote:  We have an opportunity that seldom exists. With nothing to show on the networks, no games to attend for AD's and the commissioners, and in most places no school for the Presidents, so we have a fantastic window to accomplish quite a few things that get mangled and bungled because of the inability to get everyone on the same page otherwise.

Let the Network Sports Directors, AD's, Commissioners, and Presidents get together with Emmert, even by teleconference and accomplish these things:

1. Come up with a unified plan for rights to image for players, and pay for play limits and set them in stone.

2. Go ahead and settle how any future realignment is to play out, even if the effective date isn't until 2024.

3. With realignment put to bed go ahead and determine the format for the future CFP. Will it be 4 in a champs only format or will it be 8.

4. Rework the bowl system and the tie ins to be more equitable for the respective divisions.

5. Determine the final standing on transfer rules, deciding eligibility issues for this stoppage, and determining in advance of any future emergency how they will be handled so the athletes are left hanging.

6. With all of the above in mind settle all of the conferences contracts for the future, reworking all of them and setting them to come due at the same time thereby setting all rates from the same base evaluation.

This will help with the competitiveness of all conferences and set definable standards that make clear to each conference what metrics they must meet to be able to expect raises.

7. Set a higher % of payout for all NCAA Tournament Teams. And make tournament credits all payable within 1 calendar year of the tournament in which they were earned.

8. Set up standardized training for all NCAA officials and make the officials answerable to the NCAA and not to conferences. Pay them full salaries and make sure they are eligible to call at least 2 different sports. Allow them to have benefits. This will help to standardize calls, discourage gambling influence due to the per game fee and per diem they currently get, now and make them accountable to no conference office.

I'm sure you may have some other suggestions, but they'll never be a better time to get everyone on the same page than there is right now and possibly for the next couple of months.

Then maybe we it all starts back we will be able to get comfortable with, accustomed to, and delight in the changes rather than cringe over them and stay constantly irritated by all the things that just don't seem to get settled.

I really like a lot of your ideas, JR, but #8 looks like a potential problem to me, so I would like to modify it some.

All referees would receive standardized training and would be answerable to only the NCAA. They (those currently working)would have the option of being full-time, if not already, but they would have to referee at least two sports. If those currently working are already full time, they would get a slight raise in pay if they decided to referee another sport. They would have the option to turn down this raise. Any new referees hired would have to be full time and would be required to referee more than one sport.
I want to be fair to those referees already out there on contract, but give them incentives to go along with the plan. I do believe that all new hire referees should have to do this.

Also, while I don't believe you can completely plan for realignment, I do believe it is possible to have a general plan in place that would be fair to everyone.

That is set up by having them pay all tourney creds within a calendar year and up the payout for tournament credits. That'll be a big no and they we will have a breakaway and set up a national officiating organization for college sports with part time officials for non revenue sports and full salaried officials for revenue sports. This had to be the most inconsistently and poorly officiated basketball season I had seen in my entire life. Block/charge, the stupid flopping call, double dribbling everywhere with palming seldom being called and 4 steps going to the hoop with the ball on the player's hip. I've never seen anything like it.

They get away with all of that and then there is an automatic whistle under every shot attempted from under the basket whether there is a foul or not. It's a wonder any school made a run at all this year.

AMEN!

Online Poker is booming. The guarantees are three time what they were a week ago and the poker sites haven't been able to keep the guarantees up with the prize pools.

If you want legal in the USA online poker try Global Poker. If you want bigger tournaments try Americas Card Room.

If you are saying no bailouts, fine. I have no problem with this. I remember the "too big to fail" buyout and do not the want government to have any part of it. The real economic shut down should have happened already.
