Uh-oh: An official at CAA men's tournament tested positive for coronavirus
According to the CAA website:

Official At CAA Men's Basketball Tournament Tests Positive For Coronavirus

RICHMOND, Va. (March 12, 2020) – The Colonial Athletic Association has been made aware that a game official who worked at the 2020 CAA Men’s Basketball Tournament has tested positive for the Coronavirus.

The official did not exhibit symptoms of the virus until 72 hours after the game he worked, but out of an abundance of caution the conference has made the involved institutions and tournament personnel aware of the situation so they can take proper precautionary measures.

ESPN Jeff Borzello confirms the ref worked UNCW vs Drexel.

Stadium’s Jeff Goodman reported the name of the ref, but he later deleted the tweet.

Yeah, I have a funny feeling there's going to be a shite ton of HIPPA violations when people start publicly naming who has a medical issue without their permission.

Is this how the dinosaurs died? Thanks a lot China.

You are absolutely clueless on this buddy and need to be responsible with your comments even on a message board. Use your brain and show a little heart-even you can do that, maybe.

While i do generally agree this is getting blown out of proportion, it would be much safer for everyone involved if he did have Aids Vs the Corona virus.

Magic Johnson agrees.

Remember when they shut the NBA down for that? Oh wait...

I disagree with this, but I understand where the sentiment comes from. But, if that is your stance, how do you explain what's going on in Italy? Generally curious.

I know this question is pointed at 82Hawk, but since him and I seem to agree I’ll drop my unsolicited opinion.

1. The healthcare system in Italy is a disaster. It’s a nationalized program similar to what certain politically leaning groups in the US are arguing we should move to. It is a largely flawed system in which any overwhelming strain of the flu (such as corona) absolutely crippled the system because the nationalized system promises free health care they can’t economically provide adequate infrastructure for. Essentially for years they never planned on mass numbers of people being sick all at once because a much smaller portion of the population actually provides the economic backbone of the nationalized healthcare system (taxes). So, the Italian inability to manage mass flu sickness puts on full display the failure of any nationalized healthcare system.

2. As important as point number one... find me ONE American corona virus fatality in which a completely healthy individual contracted the corona flu and wound up dead. Find me just one and I’ll say you’re right, we should all panic and cancel everything because the media encouraged us too. The only fatalities in the country thus far are people that had extreme pre-existing medical conditions that made their very existence threatened by even a simple common cold. One of my best friends is married to a lady who is fighting for her life (since childhood with CF). Those are the people in the most danger, and they’re in just as much danger all year long, every year from simple germs and common colds. So, like I said... find me one healthy individual that died from this and I’ll take it all back.

One more point, a CDC report came out today saying that ALL of the symptoms displayed by the majority of those in the US who have tested positive are minor.

This is 110% over blown hype.

RE: Uh-oh: An official at CAA men's tournament tested positive for coronavirus
You’re absolutely being 110% stupid if you think this is all overblown hype. Sure the young and healthy are going to be fine. But if you don’t limit the transmission of this virus then the young go and spread to it to folks who aren’t going to be fine. If you’re over 60 3.6% death rate, over 70, 8% over 80 14.8% death rate. Those aren’t odds I’d like to mess with, id like to keep people’s parents and grandparents alive.

Not to mention the whole point of all of these cancellations is to flatten the curve and make sure hospitals are not being overrun and stressing out our piss poor healthcare services in the states and elsewhere. I have nurses and doctors as friends who are having to read up on their hospitals policy on deciding how to prioritize ventilators for high risk patients when they don’t have enough to go around. So yeah, let’s not say this is being blown out of proportion you’re kidding yourself.

Does this suck? Yeah it does. But you don’t need to listen to the media. Listen to doctors and nurses who fundamentally don’t care about tv ratings, politics or anything but the health of patients. Yes the young won’t die but they can still get severe cases and have enough scar tissue form in their lungs restricting their activity for the rest of their life. Or they can be taking up a spot in the hospital or doctors office for someone else who needs it even for something other than the coronavirus.

Being safe and taking cautions during a global pandemic is not blowing things out of the water it’s being smart especially when things are just going to get worse. Don’t be an idiot.

Much older population and much larger percentage of smokers who are suceptible to respiratory illness. The vast majority of fatalities are over 80 years old.

This is hysteria plain and simple. Saying "global pandemic" doesn't change anything. We've had "global pandemics" before and this type of hysteria didn't exist. This isn't about athletics, but about the overall lack of common sense and rational thought led by bureaucrats. It's also about an out of control media spreading panic like a virus.

Context matters. Italy and Europe as a whole is a horrible example to base decisions on. They have a much older population and citizens who are heavy smokers which makes their society susceptible to respiratory illness. MOST of the fatalities have been people OVER 80. Why isn't this information reported amidst the hysteria? China? Really? Barely a third world country with a ridiculoulsy bad health care system.

Don't be an idiot acting without true facts based on fear.

RE: Uh-oh: An official at CAA men's tournament tested positive for coronavirus
So no empathy for the 80+ aged, less than stellar health crowd, I see? That’s pretty callous.

Mass hysteria is not helpful. But the opposite end of the spectrum isn’t helpful either. I don’t care how bad Italy’s healthcare is. They’re going full triage over there and might have to just let a pretty large number of people die. We’re not in position to look down on them, what with our high number of Seniors and healthcare issues of our own.

Those aren’t politicians or media telling us that’s going on. Those are doctors and nurses who can’t help people breathe because of a lack of resources. And they’re not exactly a third world country. In fact, a lot of the cases are showing up in the more affluent areas of northern Italy.

Many said this would be restricted to China and we’d be fine. That’s been proven not to be correct. I’d rather stay on the safe side than see what else we’ll be wrong about after the fact. We don’t fully know enough about this virus to afford to downplay it. There may well be a chronic impact after the fact that we don’t know about yet.

I am right that we are seeing panic and hysteria. I've never said this isn't serious but the vast majority of people will have minor flu like symptoms if anything at all. This is mainly deadly for those 80 years and older. And that's not callous or uncaring, that's factual. Very few news reports are talking about this so people are freaked out. And they aren't hysterical because they don't want to spread the virus, they are hysterical because they think getting the virus will severely impact their own health or their kids.

Just trying to inject facts and reality instead of hysteria.

I think the vast amount of people know this is something that is only deadly to old people. Considering I’m in my mid 20’s my friends and I looked at booking any and all vacations we could while flights are dirt cheap. But then we though about how we could come back with the virus and impact others due to our decision to do that.

We still plan to go to Mexico next Saturday as planned. Safer there at this point.

It's a fact that al most everybody I know knows people over 65 years old who would be at risk if they contacted this disease. To say anything like what you saying is callous and thoughtless. Are you capable of using common sense with compassion or are you the guy who always has a yea but response? I think you are the later but I will hold out hope for you.
