Uh-oh: An official at CAA men's tournament tested positive for coronavirus
(03-13-2020 02:29 PM)SEA33HAWK Wrote:  I don't take this virus lightly. But we average 56,000 deaths from the flu every year just in the US alone. Where's the panic there?

Exactly sir. Nobody here is being callous or lacks empathy for the people most at risk to contract it. We’ve all stated that.

Those of us not panicking are merely stating that as of right now, this thing has caused less fatality than normal strains of the flu. Additionally, we are saying the current American fatalities, while sad are just as likely from those common strains as the flu thus there is no need for all this massive panic.

Are we going to shut the country down annually during flu season now since we experience thousands of deaths from the flu annually?

That’s all we are saying. We aren’t being heartless or callous. We’re being the cool heads here and saying there’s no need to overreact.

I've never said this isn't serious but the vast majority of people will have minor flu like symptoms if anything at all. This is mainly deadly for those 80 years and older. And that's not callous or uncaring, that's factual. Very few news reports are talking about this so people are freaked out. And they aren't hysterical because they don't want to spread the virus, they are hysterical because they think getting the virus will severely impact their own health or their kids.

Just trying to inject facts and reality instead of hysteria.

It's a fact that al most everybody I know knows people over 65 years old who would be at risk if they contacted this disease. To say anything like what you saying is callous and thoughtless. Are you capable of using common sense with compassion or are you the guy who always has a yea but response? I think you are the later but I will hold out hope for you.

I have no idea what you are talking about. IT IS A FACT that the majority of deaths are people over 80. I don't care how many people I know or you know over 65. What I stated is a fact. That's not callous, that's the truth.

This matters because irresponsible reporting has created panic and hysteria. I have a daughter in HS. She has a 17 year old friend who is afraid to go to school because she might get this. She isn't afraid that in getting the virus she will be "contributing to the overall spread of the virus which would include vulnerable populations and the elderly who have a higher mortality rate". She's scared it will KILL her. Now why would she think that it would kill her anymore than getting the flu would?

Panic and hysteria, that's why. Because FACTS, like the one I just stated are being ignored while hysteria is pushed. I don't care if you think it is callous or lacking compassions. Facts aren't based on compassion, they just are what they are. And ignoring the facts or chastising those who present them only adds to the hysteria.

What a dumb***-I have no words for someone who thinks like this.

Who thinks like what? That it’s ridiculous that the media has teenagers thinking they’re all gonna die? My coworker said that the exact same things were being said by her two teenage kids yesterday because of what they hear at school and on tv.

The point is the media is causing undue panic.

How does that equal us being dumb******? I’d love to know.

This is a real problem CG. Don't think that it's not. Scientist think that there is a problem. I agree. I'm a scientist too.

There is no problem with the younger population, but there is for people that are older. That's the issue here. Drastic measures need to be implemented now.

You’re right. We should all panic and stop working, put gas mask on our kids for the next couple months and only hunt and scavenge for food.

All while Tom Hanks (who is 63 mind you), makes Instagram post during his 14 day quarantine In Australia after catching the Corona flu.

It's all about acting like you have a little bit of common sense even if you don't. we all have to go work for a living and do the right things-like wash you hands ect.,,don't go to the store and hoard all the things we need to live day to day. Wil it kill unhealthy people-yes and we need to know that it is more deadly than the flu to these folks. You can bury your head in the sand and end up like Italy or pay attention like South Korea and keep motoring on with caution. Even guys on the UNCW message should be able to understand this. Have a good day and maybe wash you hands there Bud.

So, the UNCW basketball players and other team personnel who were exposed to COVID-19 at the CAA tournament are at the halfway point of their 14-day quarantine/social distancing/isolation.....here's hoping everyone's healthy and no symptoms pop up.
