Yes, it mainly impacts aging people. Yes, it's "only" 3,000+ deaths in a month. Those are still people and this is still serious.

We are drawing conclusions off very preliminary information. That mortality rate is likely to go down, wayyyyyy down once all the cases are reported. Drawing conclusions now would be like giving the baseball Cy Young award after April.

It could go down OR up. Remember, we have very limited testing going on right now in most countries, including ours. There's possible overreporting AND possible underreporting going on.

Either way we have real, actual medical personnel TELLING us people are dying of the disease. Just because a lot of them are 80+ former smokers doesn't mean people should be understating the problem. Who does that help?

That is true but to pretend like this is not serious is just flat out stupid. If it saves lives to alter our everyday routine for a while I think it is worth it.

Side bet that it goes down, way down?

Elderly and people with underlying issues should certainly be cautious as should those that are around them.

(03-13-2020 07:44 AM)82hawk Wrote:  I am right that we are seeing panic and hysteria. I've never said this isn't serious but the vast majority of people will have minor flu like symptoms if anything at all. This is mainly deadly for those 80 years and older. And that's not callous or uncaring, that's factual. Very few news reports are talking about this so people are freaked out. And they aren't hysterical because they don't want to spread the virus, they are hysterical because they think getting the virus will severely impact their own health or their kids.

Just trying to inject facts and reality instead of hysteria.

It's a fact that al most everybody I know knows people over 65 years old who would be at risk if they contacted this disease. To say anything like what you saying is callous and thoughtless. Are you capable of using common sense with compassion or are you the guy who always has a yea but response? I think you are the later but I will hold out hope for you.

I have no idea what you are talking about. IT IS A FACT that the majority of deaths are people over 80. I don't care how many people I know or you know over 65. What I stated is a fact. That's not callous, that's the truth.

This matters because irresponsible reporting has created panic and hysteria. I have a daughter in HS. She has a 17 year old friend who is afraid to go to school because she might get this. She isn't afraid that in getting the virus she will be "contributing to the overall spread of the virus which would include vulnerable populations and the elderly who have a higher mortality rate". She's scared it will KILL her. Now why would she think that it would kill her anymore than getting the flu would?

Panic and hysteria, that's why. Because FACTS, like the one I just stated are being ignored while hysteria is pushed. I don't care if you think it is callous or lacking compassions. Facts aren't based on compassion, they just are what they are. And ignoring the facts or chastising those who present them only adds to the hysteria.

That is true but to pretend like this is not serious is just flat out stupid. If it saves lives to alter our everyday routine for a while I think it is worth it.

It would save lives every day, every year if we altered our routine permanently. No large gatherings, no concerts, no tournaments, no sports. If we were to practice "social distancing" every year we could save SO many lives. Yet, we don't. Don't the 25,000+ people who die from the flu in America each year matter? If we could save JUST ONE LIFE, wouldn't it be worth it? #fludeathsmatter#

The last paragraph is really my entire point. People live, people die, life goes on and we deal with it without panic and hysteria...except now.

If this had been responsibly reported from the beginning it would not have the panic and hysteria we see. The fact is this is more about the potential of an ADDITIONAL strain on our medical system, not a deadly virus that is going to wipe out our population. But we are just now hearing that for the first time.

I linked to an article which explains why the numbers in Italy are so bad, and those statistics severely skew the overall statistics. Italy has one of the oldest overall populations of any country on earth, so they are going to have a much higher rate of infection and a much higher rate of mortality. Europe, as a whole, is old. And a FACT the article stated was the high percentage of smokers which makes the population far more vulnerable to respiratory illness. Add to those statistics the third world lifestyle and health system of China and of course the numbers are going to be high. They have A LOT of people.

Someone already mentioned Italy on this board which means they've heard it's really bad but have not seen the information I linked to. Facts matter.

Uh-oh: An official at CAA men's tournament tested positive for coronavirus
I am given to understand that the basketball team and several connected to it are being quarantined because of the official testing positive.

Geez. Time to get off this sport message board since there are no sports to talk about. We can at least talk about our new coach later today...

The teleconference should happen - as to when the announcement will be made that is anybody's guess. Today? Tomorrow? Monday? Who knows?

Sooner the better as it lets all parties move on with a plan. If it's Burke he has a plan, a staff and a team that wants him to be the coach. If it is Siddle,it is going to be a completely different deal. The players are not around now and likely will not be on campus for the rest of the semester. It's kind of a mess for now. All the more reason to hire Burke is how I see it-right now.

Siddle is the hire, per The Herald Sun.

I don't take this virus lightly. But we average 56,000 deaths from the flu every year just in the US alone. Where's the panic there?
