RE: OT- Corona Virus- Where do we go from here?
What I don't understand is why all these large corporate retail outlets were deemed essential and largely unaffected. Grocery stores and home improvement... sure, but the others? I also understand the initial shutting down of schools... we didn't know anything about the virus other than the Chinese data that they supplied. But now we know the threat is minimal to them. I hear arguments about the teachers and staff still being at risk, but how is that different than for the employees at Walmart, Lowe's, Food Lion or the first responders? Can we not agree that education is essential? Give the teachers and school employees a bonus... I can get onboard with that... but for God's sake, open the schools!

2) There is no science to indicate kids are involved in the spreading of this virus. Get them back in schools.

Any scientific objections to either of these?

If you are symptomatic you shouldn't leave the house, period.

We've already gone round and round with kids and schools. People are focusing solely on the kids and not considering the staff.

What about the staff at Walmart? Do you consider education essential?

RE: OT- Corona Virus- Where do we go from here?
I’m married to a private school teacher. Last week, we had dinner on our pool deck with a Chesapeake Public School teacher, a Norfolk Public School principal, and a Virginia Beach Public School school psychologist. Every one of them said, if the science is there to show the kids are not at a significant risk, the schools need to be open. The staff can protect themselves, but we can’t continue to allow our students to fall behind in their education, if they aren’t at a real health risk.

Last week you wanted to force the teachers to go back to school or not pay them. This week they need bonuses!

Yes, I considered education important.

I'm not saying I agree with either, but both could be true. They are not contradictory.

What about the costs on the other side? I'm not trying to debate, but for every measure the government takes, there is a cost on the other side (economic, personal liberty, etc.) How does the proper balance get determined?

I know I'm kinda asking questions that are philosophical and don't have easy answers, but mostly, I'm just trying to get the VCU picture off my page.

Million $$ question. Used to be if no one was happy, you did it right. This speaks to our expectations as a country. Your proper balance may not be mine. We used to be far less strident and more willing to compromise. Not so much anymore. There is no middle ground anymore. It is either perfect (rarely) or a disaster (more often than not).

My belief is that this is mostly due to the facts that:
1. Our legislatures, state and national, refuse to do anything. Staying out of the spotlight on sensitive issues seems to be their overarching goal.

2. Our elected representatives refuse to work together for fear of irritating their base.

It is hard to get compromise when there is basically no debate, no working across the aisle, and compromise is seen as acquiescence. Somehow we have get to get our legislators to stop giving away their power to the Executive and Judicial if we are going to make progress on ANYTHING.

If they are not working, they shouldn't be paid. If it takes a bonus to get them to work, I'm open to that. Not a difficult concept.

So important, but not essential (unlike Walmart)?

Here’s more research showing we need to open the schools, courtesy of a study from The Netherlands.

Quote: After double-checking with all 25 municipal public health services (GGDs), it has become apparent that there were no reports of possible COVID-19 clusters that had a link to schools or childcare facilities (or temporary childcare) before the schools closed on 16 March. After reopening the primary schools and childcare facilities, a few reports have come in regarding infections among employees at schools; RIVM has not received any reports of employees who were infected by children (based on data as of early June 2020).

Virginia is in a great position now as a result of Governor Northam’s swift and unpopular decisions. Other states that took a more liberal approach are not fairing so well. Well done Northam, well done!

Generally agree, but as we enter Phase Three today there have been small upticks in the past week here (SEVA) and in SWVA that we should keep an eye on. Nature abhors a vacuum, and we're surrounded by states not doing so hot.

PS Congrats on 2500 posts!

What about Georgia? They opened before VA and continue to show downward trends.

Georgia is in the midst of a surge in Covid cases, and not showing a downward trend.

As for college kids, if this is true, then oh lordy...

Doesn't seem to be. They hit a low a week or two after reopening but have shown a steady incline in cases per day since.

The most disturbing trend in Georgia is this

If you look at deaths Georgia is on a clear downward trend since early May.

I hope so. However, we won't see the deaths (if any) associated with this spike for a number of weeks or even months.
