My take is that that study/article could just have easily been written about W&M.

Both schools want to ride hoops to glory, have Title 9 issues, and aren’t really comfortable with their conference situation. W&M’s travel issues aren’t as glaring as ODU’s.

Here’s a thought.

The health situation in this country is playing havoc with Athletic Department bottom lines. Schools really need to look at geographic realignment, or some aren’t going to survive. The NCAA, if it weren’t totally corrupt, should be lifting it’s regulations which effectively prevent the formation of new conferences.

I believe W&M should seriously be pro-active in this regard. There’s an opportunity here.

Biggest takeaway from this article was ODU need to realign to a different conference and high probability of no 2020 football season plus much less money from the NCAA since no March Madness. Very bleak and time for American creativity.

I agree that this is a good time to look at realignment. We could draw a circle on the map around Williamsburg with a radius of 300 miles and form a great conference.

Agreed. I'm sure we could follow this with a whole 'nother thread...

A conspiracy theorist would contend that CUSA was invented and maintained to make CAA geography seem logical.

RE: All Athletic Activities have been suspended due to COVID-19
ODU athletics seems in far worse condition that our College. Travel costs for all teams, especially non-revenue sports, killing them
and long travel time taking classroom time for athletes. They have no rivals, football is killing them...especially their new stadium renovation, and football prevents them from really trying to move to a better basketball situation. Title 9 may force them to drop either men's soccer or baseball in addition to wrestling due to their football division that allows 83 scholarships.

While we have problems, which will be exacerbated for not just us but all universities, due to this awful pandemic, being in the CAA
is a much better deal for us and I wouldn't be surprised to see ODU attempt to eventually return.

I suppose it's possible, but I can't see ODU and their superiority complex coming back to the CAA with their tail between their legs.

RE: All Athletic Activities have been suspended due to COVID-19
Unlike some schools in Virginia, ODU has continued to play W&M in other sports, and has continued to come to the Kap.

W&M and ODU should be in the same conference, regardless of the different school sizes. Both schools should be allowed to fund their football programs as they see fit.

The fact that W&M and ODU are not in the same conference is solely due to what the NCAA has done over the years re: football classification, as well as the loss of the Dance ticket to new conferences.

The big boys are never going to give ODU, JMU, or W&M anything other than scraps.

IMO, now is the time for ODU, JMU, W&M, and Delaware to join forces, and challenge the NCAA re: football classification and the “bar” on the creation of new conferences.

My pipe dream would be to get ECU, Temple, Army, and Navy on board as well.

For that to happen, and W&M to be involved, wouldn't we have to increase our football spending big time or our conference cohorts would have to willingly scale back their programs? We are a program built for FCS. The ECUs and service schools are built on big money foundations. Hard to imagine them interested in scaling back.

NJ, I like your conference list. I would add Davidson and Elon as possibilities. Not sure if you missed Richmond or avoided including them.

A return to the “system” that was in place for football in the 70’s would work just fine.

RE: All Athletic Activities have been suspended due to COVID-19
This is a very complicated issue ... I get it ... but one complication is the price of W&M’s tuition, room and board, and the corresponding effect on the cost of athletic scholarships.

In effect, those that fund athletic scholarships are feeding the monster that is college tuition increases ... one of the reasons why academics “like” athletic scholarships, along with international students, etc.

But administrators have to start thinking about butts in the seats, and local rivalries accomplish that with traveling fan bases. Name schools accomplish that with the local retired population.

CAA school fan bases do not travel, nor do they have name brand to excite the local retirees.

A college's existing conference affiliation may not prove to be a panacea for what ODU's study reveals is unfolding. Colleges and their athletic departments are loath to admit existential threats unless they really understand the need to change.

ODU clearly recognized it had a serious strategy/resource mismatch pre-pandemic. Revenues weren't going to cover expenses. The post pandemic outlook will be bleaker. Fans' discretionary income will be down, and ticket sales will follow. Corporate sponsors won't be as flush. Individual donations will decline.

Obstacles to change are formidable. The NCAA isn't genetically wired to be a cooperative partner to any schools/leagues not in the Power 5. Any reorganizations that might result in eight, nine or ten team leagues and risk fewer Power 5 at-large bids will be viewed as threatening to the NCAA (even though it's threatening only to the Power 5). And there is an intimidation factor that somehow prevents mid-major leaders from even suggesting such a change would be desirable for their institutions.

There is probably fear that what could be won't be as good as what is. Until the viability of the present construct begins to crumble, there is a reluctance to embrace controversial changes. Content on other message boards suggests the ODU AD is in talks with at least four other ADs on change, which would seem to indicate ODU senses its present athletic construct is untenable. One suspects ODU will have company in reaching such a conclusion, and not just within CUSA.

Over the next few months the trends that ODU identified will accelerate for many schools. The NCAA has already announced reduced funding to members for 2020. It's not beyond the realm of possibility that many NCAA members may even have to contend with declining enrollment, reducing student activity fees, the backbone of funding for many athletic departments. A school's loyalty to its present conference could become one of the first casualties.

If these trends precipitate a realignment, here's hoping the past passive bystander/band-aid the CAA approach isn't the only option under consideration at the College. As others have suggested, better options are possible within 300 miles (or certainly within a three or four state area). It's preferable to be an active participant in shaping the College's future conference affiliation, being proactive and embracing controversy, than left holding the bag.

RE: All Athletic Activities have been suspended due to COVID-19
A friend of mine's sister works in a high up position in the airline industry. She said that the airlines are predicting a 75% drop in business travel on a go forward basis once the virus is under control. Their research shows that key jobs requiring business travel are proving that it is unnecessary now that people can't fly, and can still perform their jobs. If those numbers are real, the airline industry will be changed forever. Business travelers account for only about 10-15% of all travelers, but make up 75% of the profit. In other words they subsidize leisure travelers. My guess is that we will see further consolidation. Just more reason to play against local rivals.

RE: All Athletic Activities have been suspended due to COVID-19
Major article in today's Washington Post, quoting opinions from sports leaders who did not want their named used, is very pessimistic on the chances of any college or professional sports until 2021. This includes college and NFL football, as well as possibly college basketball.

If this does indeed eventuate then our discussions become even more probably for college athletics...with the chances of major realignments of colleges into much more small geography leagues and a reduction of
scholarships across the board.

Impossible to say, of course, at this time.

All Athletic Activities have been suspended due to COVID-19
"We" went from back online by Easter to nothing til 2021. How about we just relax and see how it works out. To quote a great W&M philosopher, "All this speculation on something which we know nothing about."

RE: All Athletic Activities have been suspended due to COVID-19
I like the idea of a league with W&M, JMU, ODU and Delaware as the nucleus in a tighter geographic area. Perhaps some of our traditional Southern Conference rivals might be interested as well as Mid Atlantic schools.

I would think that our current AD might be in a good position to lead us in that direction.

I'd love to see the new league require all schools to participate in both basketball and football, although I'd miss Charleston, Northeastern, Villanova & Wilmington.
