Could be something to that thinking.

Certainly cannot hurt. Hopefully Aresco can work some magic bumping elbows with the CFP folks.

Taco Tuesdays. Invite the CFP folks up....

The move makes sense for conference geography reasons and for having the conference headquarter located in a major market.

I read elsewhere that the AAC still plans on holding the AAC media day and clambake in Newport, RI. It is a cool event, but it will be inconvenient for many members for travel. Wouldn’t it make more sense for the AAC to create something new and host a cool BBQ event in Memphis or Texas?

Lobsters are awesome, but so is BBQ.

Outdoor Texas BBQ in August doesn’t sound fun. Go visit newport in the summer sometime. There’s a reason the Vanderbilts and JFK spent so much time there.

It would be cheaper to have a Texas barbeque with a steer on the spit and flying the lobsters in than everyone traveling to Newport, RI. 04-jawdrop 02-13-banana 02-13-banana 03-shhhh 03-lmfao 03-lmfao COGS COGS 03-idea 04-cheers

-You know what? Having a national barbeque event the weekend of the AAC national meetings seems like the type of promotion the world needs. Kansas? Memphis? North Carolina? Texas? We need more competitions where all participants are winners. 04-cheers

Aresco doesn't strike me as a Dallas man. The new TV deal is done. He's 70 years old.

I bet he retires soon...

That said, the CFP ends after 2024 season. The new structure is under negotiation and will be announced on or before 2024. I suppose he could hang on until that is finalized.

With UConn gone does this move to Texas mean that the AAC has given up on the NE TV market and will the move away from Connecticut and ESPN hurt the current and future ESPN television contracts. We still don't know the real affect of UConn leaving yet do we. 07-coffee3

"NE TV market"... An oxymoron if ever there was one. New England is dominated by pro-sports leagues and smallish, niche college BB fan-bases. Even the NBE knows this, hence adding Butler, Xavier, and Creighton: none of which are in New England. Hell, look on a map; ONLY Uconn and Providence are in New England...the rest of the BE is really mid-Atlantic or mid-western.

The OLD BE was built on the "NORTH EAST URBAN TV MARKET" along the route 95 corridor from Washington to Boston along with Syracuse in upper NY state. The NBE was forced to add mid the western schools due to the loss of part of that market with the loss of UConn, Syracuse, Rutgers, and BC and its desire to split the "CROSS OVER BE" into the NBE and the AAC. The return of UConn helps to cement that North East Urban Market along the the Route 95 corridor for the NBE much to the dismay of the AAC and loss of those NORTH EAST URBAN TV's in the winter during MBB season. Hence the question as to how much will the loss of UConn effect the current and future AAC TV contracts. 07-coffee3

My point remains: if the Old Big East was so successful in their strategy of owning the New England/North-east urban corridor, then why has the New Big East not sought to resurrect the strategy? I know the history and so I deliberately did not include DePaul and Marquette in the analysis. But the fact remains that, in 2012 when the "C7" broke from the (now) American, who did they look towards to flesh out their conference? They did NOT look at New England. They didn't even look at the "North East Urban Corridor." They looked to the midwest. They added Xavier (Cincinnati, OH), Butler (Indianapolis, IN), and Creighton (Omaha, NE). They also looked strongly at Dayton (Dayton, OH) and Saint Louis (St. Louis, MO). Not a single "New England" or "Eastern" school on the list.

Now of course, Creighton, Xavier, and Butler were hot Basketball brands at the time. They also all match the institutional "fit" of the Big East. But there were other schools that the Big East could have looked at if they really thought the "Urban" and/or "New England" strategy was a winner... Heck, there are plenty of schools that could have been entrance to "markets."

The thing that separates the Big East from the American's approach is really that the Big East did not look for "markets" but BRANDS. Uconn was not picked because of their "market," but because of their BRAND. If the AAC was smart, they would not look at the "New England Market," because there really is none, but at the available BRANDS out there. For God's sake: don't add "umass" because you think it will get you into the "New England Market." They won't. Add only the programs that have an established and good BRAND.
