If we don't know how many Americans are tested or infected, why should we just live life as usual?

We slow rolled all of this.

RE: NBA suspends season
Not saying how the NCAA will decide, but it is a different situation than the NBA/NHL. The pro leagues are still in their regular seasons, with teams travelling all over the country for games; often twice or more a week. The NCAA tournaments are end-of-season events with much more limited travel.

Bring four schools to a site. If possible, change the venues from neutral sites to the homes of the 1-4 seeds. That would eliminate 25% of the flights. Ask participating teams to self quarantine for the week leading up to the game. Test everyone before they get on the plane. Use chartered planes that only carry the teams and essential personnel(they pretty much do this already). Bus the teams to the hotels and bring food to them. Test the teams after they arrive and before they leave for the arenas. Have the first two games, send the losers home. Send the winners to the hotel and test again. Maybe have the next game the day after or wait a day like usual. Send the teams home immediately. Ask the winner to self quarantine for the week. Repeat the following week at the homes of the top remaining seed in each region. Do the final four in a neutral location with the same restrictions. Any teams with members that test positive for COVID-19 agree to forfeit.

Now they suspend the season until further notice.

In the long run, this may allow them to save money. Playing games without fans forces them to give refunds. Suspending the season still allows the fans to attend at a later date, so no refund needed. Obviously, this was the call that should have been made. I think the NCAA tournament may follow suit with simply postponing it.
Not really. Small markets like Milwaukee are going to be F'ed.

Recall, the NBA already lost hundreds of millions in revenue due to the Morey tweet about China, now this.

Revenue lost is revenue lost. The CBA, salary cap, and luxury tax are based on Total Basketball Revenue, which regular seats (non-suites) are included.

Any loss of revenue will impact the future salary cap and luxury tax. Teams may have to trade players due to less TBR yet still have contracts committed to players. The salary cap for 2020-21 was already going to be lower after China, it will be much lower now after this and lost ticket and TV revenue.

Example: If you signed a guaranteed contract for say a four-year contract $10M/year in 2018 and the team based that contract off of current and future income streams and some streams were cut by the Rockets GM and now by up to 20% of the season getting cut by the virus, the franchise is still on the hook for all your money!

Some streams were cut by Chinese Communist totalitarians and then the season was suspended basically due to Chinese Communist totalitarians.
As I wrote, "Revenue lost is revenue lost." Does not matter how it's gone as it still impacts the next year's cap and luxury tax.

Revenue lost via COVID-19 is also revenue lost and it impacts both Total Revenues.

The only way it as the OP wrote, "saves money" is in the immediate term as they don't have to play players, but even a portion (10%) of NBA salaries are in escrow as the Larry Coon NBA CBA Faq says until the revenues are reached.

You all are missing the point. Yes, they are losing money regardless. However, cancelling the season means refunding tickets that were bought and losing playoff revenue as well. Suspending the season and completely it months later solves the ticket refunding issue. That is all I mentioned. Don't make it more than it is, and yes, it absolutely saves them money compared to cancelling the season.

There's essentially no chance the NBA plays an 82-game season at this point. All they're doing is leaving the door open to still having some version of the playoffs if it appears safe to do so down the road, but I'm skeptical and the playoffs are ticketed separately anyway. I'm guessing it winds up being "see you in November" but they don't have enough information to say that straight-out at this point.

You can do that too, and easily separate out Democratic Party and Republican Party talking points and myths from the real news.

Reality is out there. But way too many of us are plugged into "commentary news," so lose sight of reality.

I get it, commentary based news far outdraws reality news, which is often boring and without a narrative; and it's the narrative commentary news sells. Just remember almost all narratives are fictions.

Unplug from the machine, get back in reality.

I am lifelong liberal and feel the same way. I've gotten to the point where I just don't watch any new programs, I get all my info from the AP and other print media, as I feel it's a lot easier to sniff out any bias.

The good thing for them is they have plenty of time and they own their own arenas. If they need to wait until mid May or June 1 even they could still play the playoffs

Yes, if this "blows over" in the next month or so, they could just declare the current standings as being the regular season and proceed to playoffs.

I was looking at this this morning and the top 8 in each conference is pretty much set. In the East there is a 6 game difference between the 8th and 9th place teams and in the West it's 3.5. With only 16-18 games left it seems like a stretch that either would be made up.

They could move to 3 or 5 game series for the first round or two if needed as well.

It's interesting that some NBA execs were already on the record a few weeks ago that they'd like to explore moving the start of the regular season to December and have the playoff games be played in the summer. The big reason (and it makes some business sense on paper) is that they'd reduce the amount of games going head-to-head against the NFL and instead have much weaker competition in the spring and summer against MLB.

The NBA might be unintentionally getting a test run this summer on seeing whether that actually works in terms of fan interest and TV ratings. I think Adam Silver is as legit in protecting the players as much as any commissioner in sports, but it's a potential silver lining that the NBA could try out a schedule where the playoffs are all played in the summer when they were just considering it as an option.

Could definitely work out that way. At least shifting it by a few weeks. The other issue is they'd have to move back the draft and free agency back to August 1 or September 1 and I doubt they'd want that conflicting with football because that's a huge part of their ratings.
