There's not going to be a tournament if individual schools are already making this decision. I get the frustration as well, but this is not the flu. We're not equipped to test for it, much less treat it. Maybe it's the hype, but the next few months are going to be wild.
I think it's an overreaction. I don't take it lightly, but when the numbers shake out, i don't think the mortality rate will be much worse than the flu. Vaccinations are over rated! I had the Flu shot this year and the Flu still kicked my a$$ a few weeks ago! I work in the Biz, and the number of RFPs that have come in this week for drugs to potentially treat it is staggering.
The fact that symptomatic people in the US can't get tested is deeply troubling to me. How can we witness what's happening in Italy and question extreme preventative measures?

RE: NCAA Basketball Tournament to be played without spectators
It is the right decision and not over reacting. Only way to stop something from spreading that is spreading extremely fast is to lock it all down at all levels, let the thing die down and then get back to business. At this point we probably need to go even further at the state levels shutting stuff down for a couple of weeks.
From the sports side, I feel for the players, teams, schools and fans who were about to get an opportunity that is not normally had. The reward for their hard work, that won't be seen through. That part sucks even if it is the right decision. Hofstra fans and players deserved a chance that they won't get, and who know when the next time will come. It stinks. Drexel women in the same boat as our coach potentially leaves this offseason. It sucks, but it is the right call to cancel.

RE: NCAA Basketball Tournament to be played without spectators
NCAA Tournament and all Spring Sports Championships (including the College World Series) cancelled.
Quote:Here's what the NCAA said in a statement:
"Today, NCAA President Mark Emmert and the Board of Governors canceled the Division I men’s and women’s 2020 basketball tournaments, as well as all remaining winter and spring NCAA championships. This decision is based on the evolving COVID-19 public health threat, our ability to ensure the events do not contribute to spread of the pandemic, and the impracticality of hosting such events at any time during this academic year given ongoing decisions by other entities."
The announcement also means sports like golf, lacrosse, tennis and the College World Series would also be canceled.
Wow. The UNCW Baseball season appears to be over. At least we finished strong.

Wonder if players will lose or gain a year of eligibility.

Good question - not just baseball but all the spring sport athletes.

Canceling competitions that wouldn't be held until June is baffling. I get March Madness and suspending spring sports for the time being but this is getting ridiculous.

Exaaaaactly.
Yeah, no over reaction there right? lol
I don't fault them for being careful with all the current tournaments and tournaments over the next few weeks, but tournaments that are literally 2.5-3 months out? Stupid.

Students are barred from campus and taking online classes only the rest of the semester. How would teams practice and play games? That’s why spring sports are fully cancelled.

Thought I read that certain students could come back to campus starting March 23rd. Regardless, I just don't get why you make the decision so far ahead of time. Take a month off and see where things are then.

So, as a graduate student I’m still getting campus emails. Students are not barred from campus they actually want them to come back to campus to their dorms they just can’t attend classes because they’ll be online now

How would this not violate the laws being put into place preventing large numbers of people from being in close proximity to each other?
And why would it make sense to take online classes from your dorm? Just grab your stuff and head home.

What law would that be?

I think he meant to saw "rules" vs. "laws"

It's actually "recommendations", not rules or laws.

Depends on the locations. There has definitely been some "rules" put in place, even if temporary.

Wonder if this will gain any traction. It should
On the surface, agree completely, but it quickly gets complicated with incoming freshman, roster and scholarship limitations.

yup.....for sure. It's definitely not clear cut. There would have to be waivers for rules etc.
