There already are a lot of individual schools saying they're not competing in any more sports for the immediate future. Period. Schools like Duke and Kansas.

I really can't see how either NCAA tournament is played.

Reminds me of some of the Rice-TCU (in FW) and Rice-Baylor (in Waco) games I attended in the 80's. I could have 500 empty seats around me.

The players are breathing and sweating on each other all game. Arena staff have to clean up a lot of surfaces. Bathrooms are used by multiple people. Lots of good reasons to play it safe. The fans and family members aren't the only concern.

We get the auto-bid if there is an NCAA March Madness.

There will be. There's just way too much money to be made for the NCAA from these tournaments, especially the men's (the revenue from attendance and TV rights basically funds all other NCAA championship tournaments in all sports in all divisions, although I guess there won't be much attendance revenue this year). We'll all just have to watch the games on TV.

No March Madness.

Sigh.

Parliament to reconvene in the Fall?

RE: WBB Conference Tournament 2020
So now is the time to write the history of Rice sports in spring 2020. Like the improbable run of the women's basketball team to a NCAA regional final. Or the baseball team finding its mojo and destroying the conference on the way to Omaha. Maybe Grace Forbes getting a top 3 at the NCAA track and field championships.

You can dream bigger if you like.

Something that will stick in the Alphabet search engine, so that when someone tries to search for Rice sports results from the spring of 2020 about 100 years ago, they will see where the renaissance of Rice athletics started.

nothing about my team is regular. nothing about my last 4 years has been regular, so it’s only fitting to end my time at Rice in the most irregular fashion. but with all that being said, we are ending as CHAMPIONS. And nothing or no one can take that away. thank you, Rice. thank you, team. my love for you all is endless. E, out. ? (for now hehe)

What might have been if the 2020 women's NCAA tournament had been played

Quote:The last Ogwumike
Rice wasn't guaranteed to make the NCAA tournament field. But the Owls had just finished the regular season as the Conference USA champion by two games and would have been the favorite to capture the tournament title and automatic NCAA bid. That could have given many fans a first look at Rice senior guard Erica Ogwumike. The youngest sister of Stanford All-Americans Nneka and Chiney, Erica has had a great career herself, albeit more under the radar. At just 5-foot-9, Ogwumike averaged a double-double (19.3 PPG, 10.3 rebounds per game) this season and led C-USA in scoring. Last season she was the conference's player of the year, but the Owls' first trip to the NCAA tournament since 2005 as a No. 12 seed ended in an overtime loss to Marquette. Ogwumike had 22 points and eight rebounds in that game as Rice fell just short of an upset. This could have been one last look at perhaps the best inch-for-inch rebounder in the country and a goodbye to one of women's college basketball's great families. -- Charlie Creme
