I thought he’d go pro. Guess if the scouts don’t like him I’d transfer too. Thanks for the great years.

Indeed. Best of luck to Blaze in his future endeavors!

Rice just got a mention on the 11pm ET Sportscenter Top 10 countdown - in the number 1 slot. They mentioned that this DB is a Rice University commit. I don't have a DVR on this TV, so missed the name of the Westlake player.

Taaffe was named Defensive MVP in the state title game for the second straight year. And in the other 6A title game, Cal Varner was named the defensive MVP for Katy (he got a pick-6 and then today a congratulatory tweet from JJ Watt). So Rice signees swept the defensive awards at the highest classification.

3 of them won state titles.

I'm still shocked that Taaffe is a PWO. It wouldn't surprise me at all though if that changes over to a full scholarship prior to the fall - it probably depends on how many seniors come back in 2021.

That's weird. Based on that play alone (not to mention b2b title game MVPs) he shouldn't be a walk on. Maybe it's because he's...a white CB.

Oh you mean just like how Andrew Bird, another white CB, is a walk on?
Oh but wait, Andrew Bird is a scholarship player....

Can a PWO still obtain an academic scholarship ?

Touche.

Also, I looked at Taaffe's highlight video. As a WR he didn't impress me, not very shifty/quick.

I don't really think we want to go there.

Maybe he's a PWO because he qualifies for other scholarships?

at this point might he qualify for the low family income scholarship (if that is indeed the case) ?

Given he goes to Westlake HS, I would put the odds of his family having a low income at slim-to-none. Insane INT though, look forward to having him at Rice.

I was on academic scholarship and practicing... even starting and on academic scholarship. I know such things can be manipulated and this was a FEW years ago, but clearly you can do it.

We didn't have the same 'income based' scholarships at Rice as now, just much lower tuition... we wouldn't have qualified for income based. As I understand it, the level for income based now gets pretty high... and though I suspect nobody considered COVID when his plan was made, I know some people who made 6 figures who are now on unemployment... really sucks.

I was thinking more 'academic' though... and perhaps not all just from Rice. My kids got DAR/SAR schollies and my son had a grant from the ARMY for a video he produced for them in high school.

Will never understand this from a player's perspective. I fully understand and support kids betting on themselves. And I get having a dream school that you want to play for. But it's gotta be much, much easier to walk on to Rice's team and find some playing time. And if you have a dream school that you want to play for, I think trying to become a star at Rice and then transferring after a year or two is the most realistic route.

Though I guess Texas is Texas. New coach, new optimism, endless resources, and an education and network that's realistically no worse than Rice.

Close to home, family, friends, etc., must be a factor.

It's been online for a bit but it's worth noting that the 2021 spring roster is available for viewing. The guys we already knew had left are no longer on the roster, but I guess the two we weren't sure about are Mike Collins and Austin Trammell. Those are the only seniors of note who could have returned who aren't (for now). We do have at least 5 or 6 still on the roster who were starters or key contributors through the years at Rice. We also have two new graduate transfers (the WR from New Mexico and the QB from Weber State) on the roster, as well as two of the recent recruiting class signees (Juco LB Desmyn Baker and prep school DL Jalen Hargrove) who are now on campus at Rice.
