Those don't really exist, and what pure passers do exist (and are not content just to hand the ball off) are gobbled up by all the P5s who run the Air Raid.

I don't think we can win with a "pound the rock" because I don't think we can recruit the skill sets needed. Monster o-linemen who can blow defenses off the LOS and the kind of QB who can make it work are just two of the needs that we will have an extremely difficult time getting.

I thought Bailiff could never win consistently at Rice because of his defense, his special teams, and his lack of discipline. His teams played hard, but were sloppy. I don't think Bloomgren has an offense that can work consistently with the players we can recruit. Bailiff's teams played hard but were too sloppy. Bloomgren's teams aren't as sloppy, but I'm not sure they play hard enough to win consistently.

Sounds like we are highlighting the differences between Larry, Curly, and Moe.

I hear that there may be a CA HS QB transfer coming to a north Houston HS that could be the hard to find QB that Rice needs. I think he is already registered on this site as FutureOwlsQB12. So it looks like he is really interested in Rice.

Unfortunately with the current football hierarchy, he may have to play 3 years elsewhere before transferring.

Let’s hope not.

Well, if he’s half the player his dad was, he’ll be a good one.

He's taller and faster.... plus he has a MUCH better arm. Decent hands... though perhaps not at his father's level.

Is this prospective QB rumor common knowledge? I am curious who you are referring to?

Don't get this commitment, especially with Collins having another year. But I'm a big proponent of targeting HS QBs instead of grad transfers, so I'm not sure I've liked any addition we've had. Still would prefer that Bloomgren gives Johnson the key and changes the offense to allow him to run more. I think he could be effective (even if that just means CUSA-effective) in an option system. Would help shadow any flaws that he has throwing the ball. But that's obviously a pipe dream, because we all know what the offense will look like next year.

I think it is obvious that Bloom and Mack know that they have no ability to develop a QB. How many QBs who were successful HS 2-3 star recruited players have they been through, while still needing to take and start a grad transfer all 4 years they have been here (assuming this Fall either Collins or the new transfer start - which is a foregone conclusion)? At some point it's not the 11 QBs (and counting) they have had to work with who were incompetent . . . .

Mack has to go, a real OC/QB coach has to be hired, and Bloom has to totally release the offense to the new OC to run whatever system the OC wants to run. As I have said, sucks for Mack, but that is the only hope for Bloom as HC to work out as a "CEO" type HC.

Bloom is a Moron....another QB grad Transfer, Jake Constantine is on his way to the University of Rice, per Twitter. Go U of R, I’m sure Collins, JJ, Wiley, and TJ feel great about the new GT QB

I'm sure if Collins is staying he is starter (spelled by Johnson), but I assume he's not staying.

I think back to games where QBs we recruited out of high school fumbled the ball, untouched, on consecutive possessions, and it makes me awful skeptical that we've had the requisite talent here but just couldn't develop it

If Collins doesn't return, that's a big problem. He's one of the only players that gives me hope for next season.

Improving the scheme is more important IMO. Collins went 1-2 vs the weakest three teams and defenses we played. Jovani went 1-1 vs the two best ones and I’m not sure he turned it over once. I’m good with JJ at QB, but offensive scheme needs to evolve.

I'm not nearly as close to the program as I was for years, so my knowledge is second and third hand. But Mack's offenses before coming to Rice seemed pretty effective, and it was very clearly a different scheme from "pound the rock." I have had questions about how well Mack would mesh with Bloomgren's schematic choices. I don't know that Mack is the problem, although based on your handle you may have better information than I do.

For the Marshall win the QB did deserve the game ball. Unfortunately it was Marshall’s QB that should have gotten it. JJ played an error free game but I would think you would want you QB to pass which isn’t JJ strength. Maybe give the Juco transfer a shot

Yeah, but in those 3 games we put up points, despite injuries all over the place. (Admittedly, would've put up even more with better scheme)

Remember also that Johnson didn't have our best player in either of those final 2 games - Trammell was out. Without Trammell, our passing offense looked different.

Don't get me wrong, Collins was definitely our best passer in a long time, I would love for him to return, and Johnson can spell him from time to time if needed. But signing another transfer QB (though not an obvious staring candidate) makes me think that Collins is gone. JJ is a capable passer and will still be a freshman, which is crazy. Would be nice to have some continuity and develop a QB for once.

RE: Rice football recruiting - class of 2021
Maybe Green is changing positions and we need a new third string quarterback.

Blaze Alldredge is leaving Rice as a graduate transfer. Tough loss.
