I think all of our commitments signed except for MJ Singleton from Lubbock Monterey.. I think he might be a PWO but unclear.

RE: Rice football recruiting - class of 2021
Seems to be another really solid class. Vestal has done great recruiting for his LB group. Looks to be the strength of our current defense and the strength of this class.

Sadly I don’t think this matters until Bloomgren stops being so stubborn on offense. Even with the improved recruiting we still fall near the bottom of FBS. Going to be tough to win scoring 10 ppg on offense. Even Saban got with the offensive times a few years back now we need to update our play calling.

Recruiting is one area where I have to give Bloom props. We're currently sitting at #4 in conference ( https://247sports.com/college/rice/Seaso...l/Commits/ ), and you gotta go back all the way to 2013 to find us anywhere close to that (#5). Would be really interesting to know what changed structurally, if anything (bigger budget?), or if it's all sampling variability

Just had a LB commit from NW MS CC.

Offers from Georgia Southern, Jackson State (Coach Prime!), and a couple others.

Tre Patterson, a 5-11 WR from New Mexico (originally Crosby, TX) announced he'll be enrolling at Rice in January and will be a graduate transfer for the Owls next fall. He caught 15 passes in 3 years at UNM, including 2 TD's his sophomore season in 2019.

RE: Rice football recruiting - class of 2021
Several of our signees are still playing deep into the UIL playoffs -- Katy, Prosper, Westlake on the 6A side and Marshall on the 5A side. Even though we don't have anyone from Ridge Point this year, they had a nice win to advance to the regional finals of 6A for the first time ever (but now have a match-up awaiting with #2 nationally ranked North Shore). BJ Emanuel (Bert's son - he is a junior) had a great game yesterday, going 10 of 14 through the air with 3 TD's and adding 17 rushes for 140 yards and another 3 touchdowns on the ground. I'm really not sure why he isn't already considered a top 100 recruit in the state as he's 6-2 and still growing.

I would assume that we have a shot at BJ because he is Bert's son. But I don't quite see how he fits in a "pound the rock" scheme. The scheme I would love to have seen Bert (or Josh LaRocca) in would have been the Paul Johnson Georgia Southern/Hawaii marriage of the flexbone and the run-and-shoot. I'm not quite sure how Chad Nelson would have worked, since he did not throw particularly well. He'd probably have been more of an Ivin Jasper type--but then again, Hawaii hung 42 on Notre Dame with Jasper, so that could be an effective offense.

For WRC, no I don't endorse a straight run-only wishbone. But the flexbone with run-and-shoot and/or air raid passing can work, and be very effective when it does. I remember watching the Pirate's Mississippi State against Arkansas, who were rushing 3 and dropping 8. I kept thinking, "All you need to do is run a simple option and you would have 5 yards every time, until you got them out of that, and then you'd just throw the ball wherever you wanted." As Mouse Davis used to say about the run-and-shoot, "The only way to stop our pass is to let us run."

Another quarterback? I thought we still had Collins for another year?

Anyway, Constantine is a two year starter at Weber State (leading them into the FCS playoffs both years and throwing for 33 TDs in the two seasons). He originally signed with Boise State out of high school but didn't play there in a redshirt season, before transferring to Ventura (Community) College for one year.

The University of Rice?? Really? Maybe understandable from a high schooler, but a grad transfer?

Hahahahaha

Constantine was the worst QB in the conference. He burned bridges as he left and transferred to Towson. When Towson cancelled their fall season, He allegedly was a PWO at Washington State. He never was on the roster there either.

Constantine is an extremely self centered player with limited skills.

Y’all must have had a heck of a team outside the QB position, then, to win two championships and 40/45.

One of the top ranked defenses in the FCS for several years, good running attack as well. In fairness, Constantine was serviceable most games, but not great.

2018 208 completions 341 attempts 2205 yds 18 TDs and 12 INTs
2019 210 completions 344 attempts 2223 yds 15 TDs and 10 INTs

IIRC it's up to Collins if he wants to come back and we're just waiting to hear what he decides

RE: Rice football recruiting - class of 2021
All of this bringing in transfers is intended to mask our weakness, but instead highlights it. We need to recruit and develop a QB of our own. Problem is, it's really hard to fill the QB position in this offense. You need a drop back pure passer who is content to hand the ball off most of the time. Those don't really exist, and what pure passers do exist (and are not content just to hand the ball off) are gobbled up by all the P5s who run the Air Raid.

I don't think we can win with a "pound the rock" because I don't think we can recruit the skill sets needed. Monster o-linemen who can blow defenses off the LOS and the kind of QB who can make it work are just two of the needs that we will have an extremely difficult time getting.

I thought Bailiff could never win consistently at Rice because of his defense, his special teams, and his lack of discipline. His teams played hard, but were sloppy. I don't think Bloomgren has an offense that can work consistently with the players we can recruit. Bailiff's teams played hard but were too sloppy. Bloomgren's teams aren't as sloppy, but I'm not sure they play hard enough to win consistently.
