I would hope that we get a return game for the 2021-22 season.

Joe Lunardi’s latest bracket has Delaware representing the CAA - as a 16th seed. I don’t recall the CAA winner ever projected so low.

Whoa... Nate Darling from Delaware announces he's staying in the NBA draft.

UDee had been the clear favorite heading into the season with Darling and Justyn Mutts, but with Darling leaving and Mutts headed to VT...

Looks like the conference is completely wide open now. Everybody's young, nobody's proven.

Darling can fill it up, but even when he scored 36 on us it didn't seem like he was that good. What are the rules for being allowed to return? Is simply staying draft-eligible the end of a college career or is it based on hiring an agent?

I went back and looked up the @UD game, and his name didn't show up in the "play by play" comments on the game thread. Maybe we played him well or something, but I'm kind of amazed he's entered the draft. Luke's defense must just be *that* good.

NCAA rules are that he had until tomorrow to withdraw from the draft and retain eligibility, so he gone.

Yeah, no way he gets drafted, so this is a surprise. He's really good, and would have dominated the CAA on the way to getting some recognition nationally this season imo, but he did not have the type of junior year that would have made NBA teams pay attention. Although who knows, if he's gonna unexpectedly stay in the draft, maybe he's heard from some teams that have interest.

Also, yeah -- Luke is lockdown. Shoulda been DPOY over Nate.

He'll definitely be able to have a career in Europe, but I'm not sure that's worth leaving early for.

Maybe he already graduated? He has been in college for 4 years, with the redshirt year from the transfer, but if that were the case you'd think he could grad transfer to a P5 program.

Maybe he is assuming there will be no college basketball season, so no reason to stay... is he good enough to go to Europe?

The "Look Ahead" part of this thread is what he is thinking. I will be surprised that we have a season. He is looking to go pro instead of wasting a year. Its not a bad call if youre on the fence and this is your last year coming up.

True. I mean, the situation he's in is almost the same as what Nathan's was last year (save the new coach). Knight came back from the draft, dominated, won CAA POY, and is now in a better position NBA-wise. Darling could have very easily done the same

Good point. Current situation re: pandemic's gotta be a consideration. Leave while pro organizations remember what he did this past season rather than risk not playing and they forget about him. And even if NBA doesn't work out, he'd be valuable in a high-level league in Europe

None of us know Darling's family financial situation. He's from Nova Scotia and Covid continues to hurt a lot of people. He can readily make good money overseas.

Put me in the camp that suspects this could be Covid driven. With the coming season in doubt and already 5 years of school it would totally makes sense that he wants to get his professional career started and not count on a 6th year in school.

Bear in mind there is yet to be a plan for eligibility either. I strongly suspect there will be something, but as a player there are a lot of “ifs, ands, or buts”.

Players also have no certainty there will be a basketball season.

At this rate, there's probably a much better chance of a European professional season than a college basketball season.

I like seeing these richmond pick up game videos on Instagram featuring Ben Wight playing with a lot of our former guys & local pros. Impossible for him not to improve getting pushed be Nate, Andy, and these other pros.

20-21 MBB Thoughts & Look Ahead
Looks like some basketball players are starting to trickle back in to Williamsburg. From the previous Instagram posts, Ben Wight & Miguel Ayesa have stayed in town and taken part in some of these Richmond runs. I saw a post today that Thatcher Stone is flying in. Milkereit is flying in tomorrow. I'm sure they aren't allowed to have anything official, but I wonder if there is a date when the team "unofficially" needs to report for "voluntary" workouts.

Moving the discussion down here so as not to derail the recruiting thread...

(08-06-2020 10:57 AM)mrjoolius Wrote:  I'm all for positionless basketball in our lineups. That said, you do still need size at the 4 or 5 spot. A 6'5 185lb Milkereit or Kochera defending a 6'8 240lb forward from Towson doesn't fill me with confidence. Fischer's commitment to defense makes me think that you wouldn't have a lineup like that on the floor.

Sure, not for 20-30 minutes, but we've had success against CAA teams even just switching from man to zone and back. I especially like those weird lineups when we're having a flat game or just one where things aren't working. It's basically the lineup version of an eephus pitch.

Anyway, I think we're in agreement about just get the best talent here and figure it out.

Seconded.

I know people have thought about bringing in a grad transfer or late 2020 signee to bring some depth to the 5, but the people I've heard around the program reaaaaaally like Ben Wight.
