20-21 MBB Thoughts & Look Ahead
(03-10-2020 09:34 AM)Sitting bull Wrote:  With all the references to paradise lost with Cam Brown, where did he end up? What kind of year did he have?

Also Chase Aud and LJ Owens. I don’t remember where they went and didn’t hear anything on them.

The only transfer I have seen has been Justin at Carolina. I like Justin though have never seen the Heels finish worse than this year.

Cam Brown went to St Joseph’s and had a good year for a freshman (beat us).

Chase went to Northwestern and had to sit this year. Northwestern was bad as a team this year.

LJ went to UMBC, got a hardship waiver and played this year. LJ averaged 9.4 points per game, UMBC is 16-16 and they play top seeded Vermont tonight in the America East semifinals.

I thought that Harvey might transfer at the end of last year after the coaching change. I read somewhere that he and Knight are good friends and so when Knight stayed perhaps that convinced Harvey to stay, too. Now, with Knight gone and Harvey’s minutes at practically zero, I would almost be shocked if he doesn’t transfer. Maybe he’ll go to Elon. That would be another karmic kick in the crotch.

I think LJ's transfer was kinda independent of the coaching change

So in other words, all those teams had non winning seasons, as did we when they played here, outside Cam Brown.

I’m not knocking the kids, just the heightened importance they are referenced relative to who we have and who’s coming in. I feel no allegiance to any of them. I’m more interested in the kids who come and stick within the program.

RE: 20-21 MBB Thoughts & Look Ahead
IMO, the only justifiable reason for not playing Harvey this year was that we expected a completely different skill set from that position. Mekhel doesn't seem to be a great ball handler or shooter like Knight and Van Vliet, so he would have been playing completely out of position and against his skill set within this year's offense. Blair was a lot closer, so he was the sub in their rotation. We'll find out how Coach Fischer adapts to personnel in next year's offense. I wouldn't be surprised to see Wight and Harvey in a 2 man rotation as a traditional big. To that end, next year is a big unknown. The offense and defense likely won't look anything like this year, aside from Luke locking someone down.

I wanted Harvey to get some playing time year as he is our only PF/C for next season. I think he can be a good defensive player so I expect him to contribute.

This is interesting and definitely worth following:

It's not fun to be talking about the offseason right now for Men's Basketball, but I believe that the team should try to go after a big on the transfer market that would give the team much needed depth in the front court with the departures of Nathan Knight and Andy Van Vliet.

An intriguing name is Evan Cole from Georgia Tech. The 6'9" forward has averaged 4.4 points, 3.6 rebounds, & 12.6 minutes per game for the Yellow Jackets, and he's graduating in May with a degree in Business Administration. He would add to a frontcourt with Quinn, Mehkel, and Ben https://t.co/t7ipUvGwaq

Harvey is definitely our only returning big with game experience. Maybe that's what he meant?

RE: 20-21 MBB Thoughts & Look Ahead
On Sunday against Elon in DC, if Cam Brown was on our bench at the end of his freshman year, would he have helped us?

The loss of Audige, Owens, and Brown has left a rather large hole in the natural progression of our roster which must now be filled by transfers and precocious underclassmen if we are not to take a hit.

Not getting into why they left. Not an issue for me.

The reality is ... that they were here / signed to be here, they were talented, and their loss will be felt until Dane gets his own "flow chart" of a roster in place, with his players playing his system.

20-21 MBB Thoughts & Look Ahead
I found a way to early MBB order of finish for next season on Twitter. Means absolutely nothing and doesn't take in to account the many additions and subtractions that are bound to take place before next season. Seems very bullish on our Tribe. I wish I was that confident. Drexel #10? I think they are going to be pretty good.
My Way-Too-Early CAA Rankings:

1. Towson
2. Charleston
3. William & Mary
4. Hofstra
5. Delaware
6. Elon
7. UNC-Wilmington
8. Northeastern
9. James Madison
10. Drexel

That’s fun to look at and think about but I really think Elon is gonna be much higher than 6.

It’s so hard to know what the rosters will look like as you said as well. Agree that I wouldn’t pick our Tribe at 3 but also won’t be surprised if we do better next year than we might think even though it is a retooling year for sure.

The new point guard signee out of the DC area, Yuri Covington, is a very good addition and looks great
on his videos. Of course, who really knows with a freshman, but he may be steal for us. Still need a graduate transfer big man.

I wonder how this looked the previous year. I would bet Hofstra probably lost a high % yet they repeated reg ssn champs.

RE: 20-21 MBB Thoughts & Look Ahead
It is supposed to show the percentage of minutes/points that were scored by players who are no longer with the team (graduation, transfer, other). So we lose 52% of the minutes played and 61% of the points scored due to Van Vliet, Barnes, Hamilton and Knight graduating or running out of eligibility. In other words, the players coming back next season accounted for 48% of minutes and 39% of points. Huge loss in both categories. Means a lot more since we haven't traditionally reloaded with transfers.

Those JMU numbers will be a lot higher if Wilson and Banks actually do leave via the transfer portal.
