#10 all-time US collegian, I think
First of all: 04-jawdrop

8:56.82 would be 19th on this USTFCCCA list. If by top 10 US collegian you meant American runners, that could very well be the case as there are several foreign athletes from #s 4-18.

RE: Grace Forbes - Track and Field
I meant exactly what I wrote.

Marks made on oversize tracks (i.e. Washington) are listed separately.

Forbes is not a junior athlete (U20) anymore, as she was born in 2000.

RE: Grace Forbes - Track and Field
Do you know when her birthday is? That's kind of a silly rule that U20 means you can't turn 20 at any point during the year, so a 19-year-old with a December birthday for example isn't considered U20. But I guess that's the rule, and if she has a 2000 birthdate, then she's not eligible for the 2020 World Athletics U20 Championships this summer.

I just know she was born in 2000. You're right that she will not be eligible for the World U20 meet in Kenya this summer.

Spectacular performance!

Runner A: born on December 31, 2000

Runner B: born the next day.

Runner B is a "junior" for the entire year.

Runner A will be 19 for 365 days (leap year), but is not a "junior".

Idiotic rule.

RE: Grace Forbes - Track and Field
Just to clarify something I addressed in another thread: the record that Grace broke was 9:05.66 set by my friend Katie Jensen in 2017.

I was looking at page 16 of the latest Rice track and field record book when I said the record was Pam Klassen's 9:11.32 time. Oh well, doesn't matter - she shattered both times.

+1. We've obviously become a very sought-after university for women.

BTW I saw Jim Bevan and congratulated him at the women's game for their conference title. I asked him about Forbes' date of birth - it's October, 2000.

I don't like this way of doing things either, but I struggle to come up with a viable alternative. A good friend of mine has a young son who plays baseball each season (fall and spring), but his birthday is one day before the cutoff (the equivalent of your Runner A) and thus is always the youngest player in his age division.

I remember one chapter of Freakonomics that mentioned the fact that junior hockey teams in Europe and Russia were dominated by January birthdays, and January 1 was the cutoff for determining a player's age. The author posited (very plausibly, in my view) that at a young age the players were sorted into birth-year brackets, and the younger the age the more those extra months of physical development and training matter. Such effects would compound over the years, leading to a high concentration of January birthdays by the time these players were teenagers.
