I’m 70. I’m pretty sure these athletes don’t want to be referred to as “girls.”

They are "women" only in the gender context. If you know any of them you know they are still "girls". The "men" are even less mature. All things being equal, the female athlete on campus is the more mature than any other student save someone coming back to school from a tour of military duty.

Based on years of observation, teaching, parenting, and "loaning" money, girls become women around 21-25. Boys become men around 25-30. Military service and pregnancy seem to be almost all that accelerate the process.
