UAB Question
I’m watching an XFL game between the Seattle Dragons and the Houston Wildcatters. I could be wrong but Seattle’s “Dragon” logo is very similar to UABs logo. Really similar. Is that logo a standard “canned” Dragon or is it registered to UAB? Is so, did Seattle pay UAB for its use?

Money that we don’t have, of course. I still remember how Iowa went after Southern Miss. It must be nice to not have to worry about the $$$$$.

RE: UAB Question
According the the US Patent and Trademark Office regarding the application for registration of the Seattle Dragons logo:

Quote:The trademark examining attorney has searched the Office’s database of registered and pending marks and has found no conflicting marks that would bar registration under Trademark Act Section 2(d). TMEP §704.02; see 15 U.S.C. §1052(d).

Similar marks only have to be distinctly different. A rule of thumb is 15% difference.

That said, the Seattle Dragons logo has not yet been published for opposition, meaning while the university system could and most likely has sent a cease and desist letter to Alpha Entertainment...aka the XFL over possible infringement, there is no formal avenue to block the mark's registration at this point with the Trademark Office and/or the Trademark Court.
