If the coronavirus killed healthy people at a clip greater than 1% I would worry. It doesn't. Not even close. Korea has the best numbers and its around .7% for people with underlying health issues. And before you or anyone else jumps in with "Old people are people, too!" If it isn't coronavirus it is something else that can (will) kill them: flu, shingles, pneumonia, measles, rheumatism, dementia, diabetes, heart disease, etc.

Do: Take normal precautions (wash hands, stay home if ill, segregate nursing homes and long-term care facilities)
Don't: Cancel large events, stop travelling, hoard supplies

We all struggle to override fear with the uniquely human ability to apply reason and logic. Sometimes it is a lost cause.

Overreaction has a real impact on people's livelihood - particularly those of lower income disproportionately represented in the entertainment, lodging, and travel businesses.

I think the media would change their tune if they were the ones financially harmed by the crowd control measures. Some of them are griping about the new locker room policy, lol.

Right (?) - - the nation's main concern should be on "financial harm."

Harm to the nation's population should be considered nothing more than a trivial concern.

Dollars are more important than people. I get it.

According the John Hopkins: "As of Mar. 9, 2020, the flu is showing much more of an impact on Americans than COVID-19" and the Flu has an estimated 1 billion cases worldwide; 9.3 million to 45 million cases in the U.S. per year with 291,000 to 646,000 deaths worldwide; 12,000 to 61,000 deaths in the U.S. per year. https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/health/c...vs-the-flu

So you favor using the same measures for the flu as for COVID 19, right?

Go ahead and stick your head in the sand like an ostrich, if you want.

Covid-19 is not the flu. Everyone with half a brain knows that, by now.

The big picture is that this will have no impact on FB season, which is 5 1/2 months away.

Personal insults - the last refuge of those losing a disagreement.

Germany 70% Will Get Infected

This quote makes me think that this will impact the football season. The world is just prolonging the inevitable until a vaccine is ready, which will push this right into football season.

Quote: Mrs Merkel made the stark prediction at a news conference on Wednesday alongside Health Minister Jens Spahn.
She said since there was no known cure, the focus would fall on slowing the spread of the virus. "It's about winning time," she explained.

It's the same virus just a different/new strain.

There is not going to be a vaccine a couple months...contrary to what the administration says.

I don't listen to any politicians, they all lie, it's all about science... they have a full DNA map of the Virus from the Bat and the 1st person inflected, it's just a matter of time.

Somebody you SHOULD listen to is the FDA. They will require a Phase I clinical trial (which tests for safety of the potential vaccine that doesn't yet exist), which will take at least 3 months (very conservative estimate) and then a Phase II trial (which tests for efficacy), which will also take at a minimum 6 months. There won't be a publicly available vaccine in 2020.

For realistic timelines for clinical trials, it usually takes 5 years for this process to play out. For compassionate reasons, it's reasonable to think that could be trimmed (to at least skip Phase III, especially since there isn't a current standard of care!), but it's unlikely to be less than a year.

Of course, then there's the widespread disinformation campaign that's been allowed to linger about vaccines that would still likely prevent people from seeking it out.

More importantly, though, at least there IS a drug in Phase I trials to treat people:

Funny how everybody likes to villify pharmaceutical companies until they become a necessity...

I follow the happenings of the FDA, this will not be "Businesses as usual" it hast the political, financial, and Industrial backing to streamline and fast track the process.

RE: Corvid-19 & the 2020 FBS Season
With regard to FDA approval, there is another treatment option, a drug that already has FDA approval for the treatment of malaria.

It has been used to treat some patients with COVID-19 in China, according to China's Xinhua news agency.

The name of the drug is Chloroquine Phosphate.

There are a number of scientific articles reporting that Chloroquine Phosphate has been effective in reducing coronaviruses such as COVID-19 in vitro and may be associated with improved outcomes (fewer symptoms, less severe cases, more rapid remission) for patients with COVID-19.

In addition, the Chinese news agency reported within the past few days that there was evidence in China that Chloroquine Phosphate has been helpful in treating patients with COVID-19.

This news came at the same time that China's COVID-19 epidemic was brought under control (the growth trajectory for COVID-19 flattened). It is possible, but has not been announced officially, that this may have been related in some way to effective treatment of COVID-19 for a subset of affected patients.

-----------------------------------------------------------

Other news:

The U.S. rate of increase in COVID-19 cases, per 36 hours has been cut nearly in half over the past week. However, despite this, the increase per 7 days (168 hours) has been 500% (from 1000 last Tuesday to ~6000 today - 1 week later).

See my UPDATE thread for more details on the U.S. COVID-19 growth curve and graphs showing international growth trajectories.
