Is that what is going in right next to the Hampton inn?

Can anyone tell us how on earth is that cesspool closed down travel lodge still standing? Why are they letting a vacant dump motel sit for years? Also did they knock down Illini tire yet? Haven’t been to Dekalb since October.

I live in Sycamore, but work in DeKalb. DeKalb has been trying to invest in downtown, which is starting to take shape. The new Tavern on Lincoln and Jamrah buildings are nice. The city is not doing much with the area west of Glidden. I wish they would, but the TIFF money is being spent in the down town revitalization.

Knocking down that hotel and that Lincoln tower and putting up some nice restaurants/bars would revamp that area of town. The old Hillcrest area has really gone to **** since Star Busters, Huskie Pizza and some of those other places closed.

If they had any brain they should be investing in student life on campus. Removing all these restaurants/bars makes it even more of a suitcase school. The travel lodge is such an eyesore. Take a hit and knock it down. You wonder who the heck owns it now and is paying tax on it. Certain parts of Dekalb look like the slums. Why would any kid drive in and say wow that looks great. Illini tire and travel lodge are in prime locations. Illini tire in particular is the first thing you see when you drive into campus. This is an incredible opportunity to make something prideful to the university out of that space.

Side note: are they still trying to kick all Greek life off campus? That could be the nail in the coffin to a declining enrollment. Heck most of the kids that stay on campus over the weekend are in a frat or sorority.

Well the student center opened a new beer and wine bar in the student center which unfortunately closes at 9pm. illini tire has a lot of activity through it during the day so someone is running a personal bushiness in there right now. Burritoville is no longer opened past midnight, which used to be a late night hotspot for the last couple of years. Sea captains, which is the last restaurant open past midnight that isn't mcdonalds is currently for sale and may close by the end of the month. Rumor has it someone is opening a new bar where Rosatis closed last semester soon. And the school has backed off of greek life a little bit but total greek enrollment is under 1,000 and everybody I talk to is convinced greek life at NIU will not exist in the next 10 years.

I still can’t believe that star busters closed. Place was packed every weekend when I was at school and not a bad location. Was surprised that rosatis went into that location and not another bar.

It’s much needed. Need more places for students to go and actually want to stay on campus.

Hillcrest area east of Annie Glidden and north is ghetto. They let it happen when the overbuilt west of AG, greeks moved and enrollment went done. I was at Burritoville a couple years ago. It was horrible. Tasted terrible, meat was all fat. Wondered if it was sold since I didn't recognize anyone who ran it from 90's on. I also told someone I was there at like 1am (it was empty) and they asked why and was implied I did not value my life.Have since went to place by Tom and Jerry's. Was decent, but place was empty late. Lukulo's moving out was bad too. No one was ever in there.

Lincoln Highway looks like crap where the old Motel 6 was.

It's bad when establishments have to close early for lack of business and perhaps safety. As a side note, watching MSU play, when I was at E. Lansing a few years back, they had an area of vacant/boarded up stuff that look like Molly's area on a main drag, right across from their campus and near bookstores. Was puzzling.

I am not a fan of the greeks, but I give them credit for at least representing over the past years for a time at football games. What's the problem the school has with them? Not sure what's worse....guessing or knowing why.

I think the biggest problem with DeKalb businesses near campus is the way they built up Sycamore Road and forgot about everything else. In Champaign it's the complete opposite. They built up not only Green St. in campus town but d-dtown area which used to be crap. But as you drive on the outskirts there is plenty of vacant businesses, run down area. They revitalized their urban areas while in DeKalb/Sycamore cheap land (for business and home building) and major thoroughfare dictated where businesses went. That campus is suffering.

Probably doesn’t help when enrollment goes down and instead of students occupying cheap apartment rentals, it turns into gangbangers and low lifes. Pretty sure all the drop outs never leave Dekalb to go back home because the housing is so affordable.
They need to boost enrollment and find ways to move out non-students from campus area apartments.
Then they should back off the attack against Greeks. Love them or hate them, but they actually stay on campus more than anyone else patronizing all local businesses. Starbusters was the main bar greeks went to when I went there.

I will say one sign of the times I noticed the last couple times in DeKalb.

Late 80's, early 90's the Northern Star had all kinds of ads for food and bar specials as well as liquor stores. I guess all the local liquor stores are pretty much gone. Bars too I guess. Sign of the times as far as what and who's left, return on your advertising $. Or is it no "pc" any more for it to be in there?

Okay. All warning sirens are on now. Condition Red. Call in the National Guard.

What the heck is student life like now!?!?!

I'm going to guess the hate on the Greeks stems from the David Bogenberger incident. Sad. But they kicked the right dudes off campus.

Seems to be pretty sad situation. Busters would be packed from basically everyone that lived on Regent/Fotis area and then all greeks. Not sure what happened there.

Rosati's (AKA Buster's) is closed!?! And Burritoville isn't open past 12!?!?!

Okay. All warning sirens are on now. Condition Red. Call in the National Guard.

What the heck is student life like now!?!?!

Seems to be pretty sad situation. Busters would be packed from basically everyone that lived on Regent/Fotis area and then all greeks. Not sure what happened there.

Buster's was filthy.....but when you're drunk...who cares?

Very dead. Mollys and Fattys are the only bars left. Fattys almost never opens its back room anymore and mollys is usually empty too on Fridays and Saturdays. Entire campus is dead by Friday 3pm.

I don't see how anything could be worse that The Jungle. Albeit Otto's was bad too. I hated Jungle but did like the basement at Otto's. Made me feel like I was in someone's basement drinking their parents alcohol.

In retro, that place had some pretty crappy bars as far as interior. Still do. But at the same time other schools upgraded. NIU as a whole, never did.
