The concern with Coronavirus is not related to the mortality rate for infected individuals ( which is low other than the elderly and those with health problems, particularly preexisting respiratory issues), but with its infectivity rate,,, ( it is very contagious and can spread rapidly from person to person, regardless of whether the infected person is experiencing severe symptoms or not).

No we aren't. We are a one bid league if we all continue to suck out of conference and not do anything to better ourselves. I understand we've always played poor out of conference games, well times have changed. Until the conference improves, we can at least improve things for ourselves by creating a better schedule. If we refuse to do that, then yep we will never get an at large in this conference and nothing matters outside of the conference tournament.

Right. Alabama has 15,477 hospital beds (total). Alabama has 4.9 million people.

Right. Alabama has 15,477 hospital beds (total). Alabama has 4.9 million people.

I imagine the greatest fear in AL and some other states is that it gets a foothold in some rural community that no longer has medical facilities...

When discussing the larger grocery stores tending to stay out of less wealthy areas, the term "food desert" is applied. In much of rural Alabama we are seeing the rise of "medical deserts" as hospitals and their attending physicians leave those areas. If a disease like Corona gets a foothold in such places, it may be very difficult to control its spread, particularly since many of those in poverty circumstances rarely go to a doctor (who may be 50 miles away) until they are already very sick and then they show up at an ER.

You can "thank" Alabama's Governor , who refused to push for expanding Medicaid (which would have brought millions of extra federal $ to the state), for the demise of rural hospitals in our state.

You can't praise UAB for being a medical epicenter and then criticize them for actually trying to prevent a pandemic-level threat from happening.

Sure he can. The people who keep thinking this is nothing more than the regular flu are just simply choosing to not live in reality.

Quote:The Providence, Rhode Island-based (Ivy) league said the decision was made in "accordance with the guidance of public health and medical professionals to discourage and limit large gatherings on campuses in light of the coronavirus (COVID-19) situation."

For most people, the new coronavirus causes only mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough. For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia. The vast majority of people recover from the new virus.

I'm sure the families of love ones that have die from COVID-19 are comforted by that last sentence.

1. No vaccine for CoronaV.
2. Not contained.
3. Don't know how long it will last.

Common sense says don't put yourself in a situation to be exposed if you can help it. I canceled my trip to Costa Rica this month because of new cases there.

That action by. our DR DR Governor was an ALABAMA Republican Party action. Several Republican governors in other states were very happy to partake of those millions of federal $$$ by expanding Medicaid in their states. Alabama simply refuses to do anything that will benefit poor Alabamians -- apparently thinking they will run those "undesirables" (aborigines?) out of this state. They also refused to provide matching funds so the state's cities could access federal funds to modernize and expand their public transportation systems to effective levels.

It was said at the time that Bentley was willing but his political adviser, she of the well-handled yet still-perky 36C's, vetoed it. She told him to kill UAB football, too. I hope they sag.

Quote:Maybe some should stop professing to know certain science when the science isn't certain.

That's a classic straw man argument dating to the trial of Galileo at the very least. Science is never certain. That, by definition, is science. Inquiry never ends.

You know what the state turned down when they passed on that expanded Medicare? The Feds said "We'll give you eighteen billion dollars for healthcare for your people, but we require you to chip in a billion to qualify", and Bentley turned it down, because it was Obama making it happen.

If I said to you, "Hey, if you give me a dollar, I'll give you eighteen" you'd be digging out all your dollar bills. Yeah, the tax money to pay for it would have had to come from somewhere, which meant some sort of a tax... but what would we have in return? Start with all those closed rural hospitals, where people have to drive an hour, hour and a half to get to an ER, or to visit your family member in the hospital.

So yeah, we beat back creeping socialism providing health care to people without it, and let other states get money to care for theirs instead. I don't see that as a win. I mean, the program was going to be running nationwide whether we were in or not, right?

RE: C-USA tournament in Frisco
As to COVID-19, there have been 900 new cases in 7 days.

Just under 400 of them have been identified in last 24 hours.

Exponential growth. The greatest fear. Is the count rising from more tests or faster spreading? We can’t know, which is why the incompetence of how this was handled is criminal. They pissed away 4-6 weeks of planning and prep time, and Trump didn't give a damn about it until the stock market crashed.

Dan Wolken has an article up on USA Today saying that the NCAA should pull the plug on the dance now, not wait until a player tests positive and they have to quarantine everyone who got near him (or played against him). He tweeted about it, and the thread is full of boneheads talking about Michael Jordan's flu game, and how no one even knows if anything is going to happen. Look at Italy, they've taken a massive hit and it's still growing.

Put it another way. My brother works at a hospital in San Antonio. He's a respiratory therapist. If your sib, mom, wife, or kid had that job, would it still be "Aw, it's just the flu"? 'Cause I sure don't see it that way.

I click on a thread about the basketball tournament and get to see people opining about how politicians are to blame for a virus. I've been on this board for over 15 years, but I think I'm about done with this place.

Back in the day, those threads would have been split off into the Political forum but that doesn't exist anymore...

Same as smack forum when people attacked players, coaches, school other posters....

yeah this board has been dropping for years...that poster from memphis turned the board to Jerry Springer trash...
