RE: 2020 Spring Football Roster
Article in today's Daily Chronicle by Kaleb Carter:

Marcus Childers is not on NIU's spring roster for the upcoming season, per an inadvertently published roster that was taken down from the NIU Athletics website Tuesday.

An NIU spokesperson confirmed Childers is not on the roster, but said that the roster was incomplete and not supposed to be published.

Childers would have been a redshirt senior and has a year remaining of eligibility if he wants to use it. The Huskies will have transfer quarterback Andrew Haidet coming in the fall from Houston Baptist.

Childers, who led NIU to a 2018 MAC Championship, was the backup to Ross Bowers a season ago, played in nine games and started in NIU's season finale victory against Western Michigan.

Someone on here posted that he was quitting to focus on his master's degree. Makes sense. Bowers is the clear cut starter. He's gonna peak at holding the clipboard and maybe a few gadget plays. Might as well focus time and effort on preparing for life after football.

I recall that but Childers was no ordinary backup, he had over 2 years worth of starting QB experience. To basically not say anything about him quitting from our coaches is just odd.

RE: 2020 Spring Football Roster
Some other observations after reviewing the spring roster:

Bowers has dropped 15 lbs. An effort to be more mobile? Does it make him more likely to get injured?

Tyrik Henderson moved from CB to S. Seems like a good chance he starts opposite Appolon, as his main competition will be two RS SO PWO's (Earl & Ross), and early enrollee true freshman CJ Brown.

Cam Mattox has put on 13 lbs. Could be huge as he flashed as a true freshman last year with 8 tackles and a sack in limited playing time. We are DESPERATE for pass rush and that was even before Jawon Denton's departure.

Most of the more veteran offensive lineman have dropped weight. Maybe an offseason focus on being more athletic up front and being more prepared for an up tempo offense?

Young WR's Leon Payne and Messiah Travis both put on 12 & 14 lbs respectively. May not quite be their time yet this year, but good to see them getting stronger and more college ready.

Dennis Robinson has dropped some weight, hopefully that leads to more separation on his routes. Also, hopefully he learned to catch in the offseason!

Nick Rattin has put on 23 lbs! Guess he is ready to thump at MLB and be more successful getting off blocks.

The posting of the video from this morning's first spring practice was just cruel. I'm ready for football season and it's only March 03-weeping

Nettles out for the Spring. Gives the new guys extra reps.
Quote:"
The running back position is going to be exciting to watch," Hammock said. "You've got some guys competing that we've seen this offseason - Rondarius Gregory, Erin Collins, Jay Ducker, Shaq Oliver – that have been competing their butt off. They see an opportunity to play with no returning starters at their position. Jordan Nettles is hurt, so he's a guy that we know and he'll be back in fall camp.
