from Enquirer, wonder if he coaches tomorrow:

Father of Cincinnati basketball coach John Brannen dies
Fletcher Page, Cincinnati EnquirerPublished 12:25 p.m. ET Feb. 29, 2020

Cincinnati basketball coach John Brannen previews the Bearcats' matchup with Houston. Cincinnati Enquirer

The father of Cincinnati basketball coach John Brannen, also named John Brannen, died Saturday.

Brannen recently battled ALS and dementia, coach Brannen wrote of his father on a social media post.

"I want to thank our staff and players for helping, supporting and caring for me and my family, particular this last week as my dad’s condition declined very rapidly," Brannen said.

John and Debbie Brannen were married for nearly 50 years. Basketball was a constant for the Fort Thomas residents because both of their sons, John and Grant, played and were coaches.

John Brannen coached four seasons at Northern Kentucky before moving this season to UC. Grant Brannen stepped down as coach at Walton-Verona High after compiling a 116-65 record in six seasons.

John and Debbie routinely attended 70-plus games a year.

"I just lost my Hero," John Brannen wrote. "Love you Dad."

This story will be updated...

Oof, that's terrible. I knew his dad didn't look well. My dad had similar problems. It makes me happy to think that Brannen's father got to see him coach the Bearcats. Must have been a thrill, even in his state. Bless him and the Brannen family. RIP.

I would guess it is more likely that he coaches Sunday than Tuesday.

But whatever coach decides. Family first.

Every now and then we get a big reminder that it’s just basketball.

Yeah, he's probably already in Houston. It wouldn't make much sense to fly in early.

That happened to me once - I had a meeting that day that I had already prepped for and knew I'd need to take time off later in the week for the funeral, so I just went to the meeting.

I'll never feel comfortable telling someone how to cope with tragedy. I hope Coaching on Sunday is therapeutic for the Brannen family. RIP

I know death is a part if life, but it is never easy. Prayers for coach B and family. I'm sure his Dad was proud of him. and it was a blessing he has been coaching in the area the last 5 years of his life.

gosh. Sorry to hear this. I wondered why he wasn't at the Coaches show last Monday. Didn't his dad just attend a uc game a week or so ago? several friends have passed from ALS. I HOPE one day they find a cure.

RE: Say a Prayer for Coach Brannen and Family on Loss of Dad
Lost my dad in early february.
3 long days at the hospital as he transitioned through to death.
Five crazy busy emotional days after taking care of the funeral decisions and preparations.
Just no way it is easy for anyone unless you have no heart.

Very tough for coach to be in Houston today for sure.
Likely had an effect on game prep but Ws and Ls are ultimately not what matters in life.
