CAA stats with one game left in conference play
Offense is still struggling, but I just glanced at the conference only stats and have to say I was pretty surprised with some of our stats considering we started in the hole with an 0-6 record:

#4 defensive FG% .438
#2 defense 3pt FG% .311
#5 OFFENSIVE reb 32.8 per game
#2 blocked shots
#4 steals
#5 TO margin

THIS is the defensive based team we've been looking for as a mid major. Especially the 3pt defense based on where we were last year and defensive FG%. Also surprised to see us at #5 in offensive rebounds.

Burke mentioned the defensive FG% in his post game comments. I think he said in the last month, UNCW has jumped up 95 spots in the D1 rankings. It was either 95 spots or 95 percentage points. Anyone else remember the exact words?

If that's true, it's simply amazing. That would be about a 25% jump in just 11 games.

It just proves like i've been saying all along, defense is a mindset. Some here thought we didn't have the right guys. If you are a D1 athlete, you CAN play D, you just have to want to do it. Burke appears to have changed the mindset to get them to not only want too, but take pride in doing so!

If you look at the whole season we are ranked #128 in the NCAA for 3pt fg% defense at 32.2%. Last year we gave up 38.8% which was #348. And, last year teams scored 36.9% of their points from three ranked #340, this year just 29.6% and #139 in the nation.

It's not just a mindset, it's defensive strategy. Burke coaches his players to know who to lay off and who to cover. If you watch closely, it's like our guys dare certain players to take wide open threes and a lot of times they bite. CofC is the poster boy for that strategy. We did it against Drexel last night as well. We did it against Towson and they shot lights out from three and hadn't all year. We gambled and lost that bet.

It was also never about the right guys for me. It was that we didn't have the right guys for McGrath and how he coached. Then again, I have no idea what kind of players fit McGrath.

Strategy is important for sure, but if the players don't buy in it doesn't matter. He changed the strategy AND the mindset

McDonald's All-Americans. They can play above CB's and Roy's lack of coaching.

Burke's defensive system is better than Keatts' was because it doesn't stop when the ball gets to the paint.

I don't recall McGrath using the box and 1 defense much, but it's been something I've seen in nearly all the games I've watched since Burke took over. That defense alone prevents us from getting abused in the paint and allows Burke to focus a defender on their best shooter and dare the others to shoot the deep ball.

The Brooklyn Nets used some Box-and-1 on Bradley Beal and the Wizards the other night. That was strange to see in the pros. It almost worked, too.

Seems like it should be common sense in the coaching world. I've used it several times this season at my level(obviously wayyyy down the ladder.) But, you are getting torched by one guy, but your best defender on him and limit his touches!

Nick Nurse used a box and one in the finals last season too, it worked exceptionally well.

RE: CAA stats with one game left in conference play
A little more detail on CAA play under McGrath and Burke

Burke 67.1 ppg Opp 69.27
McGath 63.3 ppg Opp 73.8

Burke 43.24FG% Opp 42.4
McGrath 38.0 fg% Opp 46.5

Burke 3pt% 28.42 Opp 26.8
McGrath 3pt% 29.46 Opp 40.5

Burke Reb game 33.6 Opp 37.1
McGrath Reb game 31.6 Opp 39

Burke 5-6 record
McGrath 0-6 record

Same players, amazingly diffrent results. If anyone is wondering why he is getting so much support from the players and fans, here's your answer and what they see when they come to games. Not to mention, Burke is 4-2 at home.
