I know a few cases personally in January where people were bedridden for a week or so, called it 'the sickest they've ever been', went to the doctor's, & were told it wasn't the flu. They didn't turn to pneumonia, but I don't think it always does. They could've had it. We weren't testing in January, & the thing's been here since January at the latest

RE: Coronavirus-realistic fear or hyped?
It's tempting to say it's been already here, but if it were, then the hospitals would be overloaded by now. It's probably only been in Michigan since the end of February.
There's a nasty sinus bug going around my whole family had. Plenty of junk with this added on top of it now.

Some push back on this article
Carl T Bergstrom
I was just going to post this... it came across my twitter timeline...
There are things I agree with in it... i.e. the hysteria being driven by illogically looking graphs and diagrams that are meant to likely instill fear... some of his logic is off as noted in a previous reply... the testing is so far behind the numbers are not going to make sense.
Based on global rates however... it can be shown that the mortality rate is leveling off at just around 1-1.5%... which is MUCH lower than originally figured when the outbreak occurred globally.
I think we are going to see a MASSIVE uptick in cases in the US over the next week and its going to just FREAK people out who haven't been paying attention to the fact that many people are currently walking around without even knowing they have it... They indicate that over 80% of the population in the US who get this virus will have minimal to no symptoms at all... its the constant blaring of death toll and cases found thats plastered on all media both mainstream and social that has everyone buying up toilet paper like they are going to be hunkering down for years...
I think that was the overall deep message of that article... as poorly outlined as it was with statistics that made little sense in the overall...
But yes... I think they took the article down.

RE: Coronavirus-realistic fear or hyped?
The largest issue isn't that that everyone gets the disease... its that the number of those who get it and need medical care and ventilators to survive will quickly outweigh the resources we have.
One glaring weakness we have in the US is a blind reliance on a country we are nearly at war with daily for our resources... China. If this isn't a time to take a good hard look in the mirror and how we position ourselves in the global economy....
Trump has some really important moves to make during this pandemic... #1 being... to turn ourselves around with regard to reliance in times like this on our enemies for what we need...

Right on.
The Diamond Princess cruise was as close to perfect a test as you can devise, though with a much higher average age. Most did not get infected in tight quarters, most were harmless cases, a death rate under 1% if good care is available, but a relatively large amount of serious symptoms. This epidemic is a near perfect stress test for our medical system, and if we want to keep it under 1%, we have to survive the first wave.
Thank God this wasn’t Nipah, as depicted in the movie Contagion. This will lead to better prep for the next Spanish Flu or Black Death.

A study of that cruise ship said that the virus survived in cabins for about 17 days FWIW.

RE: Coronavirus-realistic fear or hyped?
This was interesting....
Quote:Scientists in Iceland found 40 mutations of the coronavirus among people with the deadly bug in the country — and that seven infections came from people who attended the same soccer match in the UK, according to a report.
The researchers discovered the mutations — or small changes in the genome of the virus — by analyzing swabs of COVID-19 patients in the country, where nearly 648 cases had been reported as of Tuesday afternoon, according to the Iceland outlet Information.
Health authorities, along with biopharmaceutical firm deCODE Genetics, tested 9,768 people, including those who had already been diagnosed, people with symptoms and high-risk populations.
Some 5,000 people who did not show any symptoms agreed to participate — and 48 came back with positive results for the virus.
The results ultimately helped deCODE Genetics determine how the rampant virus entered Iceland in the first place.
Quote:“It is interesting with the 40 specific variants that fall into three clusters that can be traced back to specific sources of infection,” the professor said. “Coronavirus is known as a virus that can mutate reasonably violently. We have seen reports of variants from China already. That way, it fits well with what one expects.”

Just keep in mind, the mutations have a much higher chance to be good for us, making it closer to the other coronaviruses: "Over time, it’s likely that the new virus will become more contagious, but the variants that cause severe symptoms may die out, Dr. Derek Gatherer, an infectious disease specialist at Lancaster University, told the Mail."

It's Toilet Paper Thursday here in S FL. Radio listeners call in with toilet paper sightings. Good news, a number of locations are back in stock.
A restaurant was giving away a toilet paper roll
with a large take out/delivery order.
My brother flew in from Philly yesterday. There were 8 on his flight. He talked to an airlines employee
and was told a flight came in with only one passenger. Saw occupancy rates in hotels vary from 7-29%, averaging about 19-20%. Traffic is picking up
on the streets.

Michigan #5 in Total # of Cases, just behind Washington State @ #4, & California @ #3
Bunch of Recoveries reported today
USA now highest # of cases, passing Italy & China, but still trails them heavily in Deaths
