Because screening and testing was focused on people recently traveling from China the spread of the disease had gone undetected for about 6 weeks until the nursing home outbreak. This has huge implications for the coming weeks as it’s most likely incubating throughout that community and likely through more states. We’ve seen new cases yesterday in FL, NY and RI

"The vast majority of those infected sooner or later develop symptoms"

"The most common symptoms are fever (88%) and dry cough (68%). Exhaustion (38%), expectoration of mucus when coughing (33%), shortness of breath (18%), sore throat (14%), headaches (14%), muscle aches (14%), chills (11%) are also common. Less frequent are nausea and vomiting (5%), stuffy nose (5%) and diarrhoea (4%). Running nose is not a symptom of Covid"

"20% of infected people in China needed hospital treatment for weeks"

"China’s bold approach to contain the rapid spread of this new respiratory pathogen has changed the course of a rapidly escalating and deadly epidemic. In the face of a previously unknown virus, China has rolled out perhaps the most ambitious, agile and aggressive disease containment effort in history"

"Much of the global community is not yet ready, in mindset and materially, to implement the measures that have been employed to contain COVID-19 in China"

"COVID-19 is spreading with astonishing speed; COVID-19 outbreaks in any setting have very serious consequences; and there is now strong evidence that non-pharmaceutical interventions can reduce and even interrupt transmission"

RE: Coronavirus-realistic fear or hyped?
Interesting graph on Pg5 of this WHO SitRep. This graph shows an uptick from about 100 confirmed cases OUTSIDE of China to more than 2000 cases in 2 weeks. This is the graph of the pandemic that we didn’t want to see but knew would happen. Keep in mind the unconfirmed cases are probably much higher given that the test kits are in short supply in the US. I can guarantee that Senegal has fewer resources available to confirm cases.

This virus is preying on the elderly and immune deficient.

Most of those who contract this in healthy state will be fine. Issue is transmission and incubation period.

I’m curious to see how it affects those who may have already gone through and recovered from the current flu strain. If the body is already resistant.

Curious.

Unfortunately, there are plenty of people dumb enough to believe they can contract the virus by drinking Coruna beer....sigh!

The Chinese government is brutal, and untrustworthy. We should all be flying Hong Kong flags in support of the protesters there. But alas, self-described "Social Justice" champions like Nike and the NBA would frown on it...

In late December, several genomics companies tested samples from sick patients in Wuhan — the center of the coronavirus outbreak — and noticed alarming similarities between their illnesses and the 2002 SARS virus, the Sunday Times of London reported, citing Chinese business news site Caixin Global.

The researchers alerted Beijing of their findings — and on Jan. 3, received a gag order from China’s National Health Commission, with instructions to destroy the samples.

Elderly folks with underlying health issues are most vulnerable. What is noteworthy is that no children are dying of this.

Heard from an expert yesterday that it appears that there may be two variants of this virus out there. One is more easily transmissible but rarely fatal while the other is more difficult to pass on to others but is much more deadly. Haven't heard any more on this theory yet.

Here's some more details, I've heard conflicting reports on the severity of each and which one is closer to the "ancestor": https://www.newscientist.com/article/223...re-deadly/

The longer it stays around and more people it infects, the more it will mutate. The odds are in favor of it becoming less severe and easier to spread, though. The faster a person dies, the fewer people a strain can infect.

The most successful germs of all are the ones living in your gut, bacteria so critical to your health you might die without them.

WHO says mortality rate is 3.4%.

Trump tells Hannity number is "false, but that's just my hunch."

What a leader we've got.

Nearly every doctor has said the same. Due to the vast amount of unconfirmed cases the rate is undoubtedly lower. Or do you think every single infection has been tested/confirmed?

RE: Coronavirus-realistic fear or hyped?
This is why the spread of the disease went unchallenged 6 weeks prior to the nursing home outbreak. What a cluster-F of a response.

https://news.yahoo.com/california-man-se...42979.html

He said "the alarm bells" sounded when he saw how the outbreak was being addressed at San Francisco International Airport.

"They literally had no idea what they were doing," he said, adding that one airport official even admitted that since things had escalated so quickly they were in disarray.

As passengers got off the plane, no one was at the gate to record their temperatures, he said. (One of the symptoms of the disease is a fever, though a few cases are asymptomatic.)

He also said no one was wearing masks.

It took him hours to go through customs, get his temperature taken at customs, and fill out paperwork. The man said the paperwork that the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention gave him was handwritten and then photocopied.

People returning from China were taken from the immigration gate to a designated area to have their temperature taken. But since neither he nor his family members exhibited any symptoms or felt sick, they weren't tested for COVID-19.

Passengers coming from China had to wait in "the little black room" in the airport, typically used for passengers with visa problems, he said.

The Bay Area resident said immigration officials didn't wear any sort of protection and were impatient with people, telling them to stop asking questions when they inquired about the wait time.

"It was really not a good experience at that point," he said.

If he had returned from China's Hubei province, he would have been given a government-mandated quarantine.

But what he was given instead was a verbal recommendation to stay home and avoid going in public for 14 days. CDC officials also gave passengers cards with guidelines about how to self-quarantine and told him to give it to a primary-care doctor, should he visit one.
