Not one mention of Jon’s return. Why is that?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
During the broadcast of the game Jay Colley mentioned that during the pre-game stuff re graduating Seniors Jon had some officially posed pictures with W&M Seniors he had recruited [Nate and Andy]. Jay also mentioned that the W&M Athletic Administration showed "class" in doing so. I wonder if the players requested this, or the coach?

I watched on COX TV, and during the entire game, Jon was seated at the very far end of the Elon bench. There was an empty chair beside him which I assume was for their Head Coach, who was usually standing along the sidelines.

For those not able to attend...

Coach Holmes was recognized when Nathan was being honored. The PA announcer said he had recruited both Andy and Nathan...Nate's Mom hugged Holmes for a VERY long time...it was a great moment. Multiple photos taken with Coach Holmes and Andy/Nathan's families.

I thought they did it right.

Are we giving the refs credit for giving us the game?

No, we should have shot another 39. Not faulting the refs for not calling everything, we'd still be playing if they did. Elon's entire offensive gameplan is predicated on moving screens and grabbing defenders to try to draw fouls on cuts. Their "defense" is built around fouling constantly. Almost literally, everything #5 did on the court was a foul. After knowing how the Hofstra game was going, I was kind of hoping Fischer would pull Nate so he wouldn't get hurt by a team that had no desire to actually play basketball.

Good points. I thought 39 shots was a bit much too until I looked at Elon’s game stats. We weren’t their opponents high for the year. I saw very few games where their opponent shot less than 20, most looked higher.

Since folks are pointing out mistakes in bubbadog's post: it was not Van Vliet's third consecutive double-double. In fact, it had been four games since his last one (Drexel).

Spot on. Going into the year, of course, expectations were different but now that the regular season is over ...:

Good attendance is not a shocker. We all know that people love a winning team and the combination of a winning team plus Nate's story brought in the crowds.

I am not the least surprised by Nate's performance this year. I, and lots of others, thought that he should have been preseason POY and I, and others, thought that the preseason pick of the Tribe being so low was atrociously bad considering that we still had Nate. Since Van Vliet turned out to be as good as advertised, Loewe greatly improved his play, and the transfers were better than we could have even expected, then yes the performance was very gratifying.

Sometimes good performance does not equate to a good record. It is equally gratifying that this year the record and performance seem to be on par with each other. In fact, re the record, I still think that we gave away wins against St. Joe's and maybe St. Francis, and that we should have beaten Drexel and UNCW (although it is super hard to win even all your conference home games, and those were road games). Even with Nate, the record was better than I expected.

What a great job by the staff and players to win 21 games, finish second in the league after being picked near the bottom, and go into March with a realistic shot at cutting down the net.

I'm so proud of the players who stayed through the transition and grateful to the guys who transferred in to shore up a depleted roster. Nate deserved a great senior season and I'm glad he got one. I know it's not over yet, but no matter what happens next week I'm really thankful for the way this season has gone. I was expecting us to look bad--JMU bad--this season. Instead, we got three months of exciting basketball, and it all felt like playing with house money.

Great job all, thank you seniors, now let's go play at least four more games.

04-cheers

This was a great post!

Read online that Coach Holmes attended the game at his alma mater UNC tonight honoring senior night part duex for Justin Pierce. Pretty cool that he was able to be there for his guys on their big nights.

Seeing the clear affection that Knight and Van Vliet had for Holmes was a special moment in the pregame ceremony.
