RE: Official Game Thread: @ Wofford
Wofford #154 in Kenpom, 16-13, 7-8 in conference

Wofford has taken some of the shine off the Richardson Center by losing 3 in a row to middle of the pack opponents Chattanooga, Mercer and Western Carolina at home. Those 4 teams are in a midconference dog fight to avoid being the one forced to start SoCon tournament play on Friday together with VMI, The Citadel and Samford, having to play 4 games in a row to have a shot at the SoCon title. Wofford put themselves in a tough spot with those losses. But the Terriers showed Saturday against Furman that they haven’t lost their bite.

As I posted on another thread: the Terriers play their best against the best (Furman, UNCG and ETSU), beating BOTH Furman and UNCG in the Richardson Center, and coming within an overtime loss (UNCG), a last second bucket (Furman) and 2 points (ETSU) of sweeping the season against the SoCon’s best. Expect a team that doesn’t quit and will go down to the wire and close out the game tough.

Senior Nathan Hoover’s scoring has gone up from 13.6 to 17.4 in conference games, as has his shooting percentage, which was a miserable .275 in conference, but has gone up to .324. Those numbers are of course even higher in recent games.

6-9 225 Rs-Jr Chevez Goodwin has also seen a big increase from 9.2 ppg to 14.1, and his FG% has shot up to .703, (no three's). Again the recent game numbers are even better as he has become a real scoring threat inside for the first time in his career.

Storm Murphy and Tray Hollowell have dropped a bit, 14.8 to 10.4 and 9.4 to 6.4 respectively.

Last time the Bucs held the Terrier starting 5 (Murphy, Hoover, Goodwin, Hollowell and Stumpe) to a mere 17 points. But low scoring reserve Rs-Freshmen 6-5 Messiah Jones and 6-7 Isaiah Bigelow lit us up for 26, nearly triple their average and 54% of Wofford’s total points. They have more athleticism and size than Wofford teams usually bring off the bench and scored effectively inside.

The Bucs benefited by having Jeromy get 9 points and 8 rebounds last time. [EDIT - Johnson City Press says he'll be back for this one!] But Lucas has been averaging a steady 12.2 points and 7.0 rebounds in the last dozen games, not the 2 points that he had the last Wofford game. Joe Hugely didn't play at all last time. Bo and Tray average 27 points a game combined, not the 12 they combined for in the first Wofford game. The Bucs have done well improving their scoring the second time around against conference foes, averaging 8.3 points better, including 19 better against UNCG and 18 better against Furman.

Kenpom says Bucs by 3, with Wofford having a 39% probability of pulling the upset. But they said we’d win by 10 last time. Not by 1!

The Bucs need to play like a team that has earned an NCAA berth and demands the respect of a decent seed.

Back Court:
#10 6-4 185 Sr Nathan Hoover 34.9 min, 17.4 ppg, .324 from 3 (2.8 makes), 3.4 rebs, 1.3 assts, 1.1 t.o.’s, 0.9 stls
#5 5-11 180 Jr Storm Murphy 32.3 min, 10.4 ppg, .333 from 3 (1.4 makes), 3.1 rebs, 3.9 assts, 2.2 t.o.'s, 0.9 stls
#21 6-2 185 Jr Tray Hollowell 19.5 min, 6.4 ppg, .313 from 3 (1.6 makes), 1.9 rebs, 1.4 assts, 1.3 t.o.'s, 0.3 stls
#4 6-7 185 Rs-Fr Isaiah Bigelow 14.9 minutes, 4.8 ppg, .318 from 3 (0.9 makes), 3.1 rebs, 0.4 assts, 0.6 t.o.’s
#11 6-1 175 So Ryan Larson 18.9 min, 3.1 ppg, .318 from 3 (0.9 makes), 2.2 rebs, 1.4 assists, 1.3 t.o.'s, and1.1 stls

# 6- FR Zion Richardson 7.0 min., 0.7 ppg, only one 3, 0.9 rebs, 0.3 assists

Front Court:
#1 6-9 225 Tr- Jr - Chevez Goodwin, 23.4 minutes, 14.1 ppg on 0 3’s, 6.6 rebs, 0.9 blocks, 1.6 t.o.’s.
#15 6-5 215 Sr Trevor Stumpe, 25.7 minutes, 7.0 ppg, .333 from 3 (1.4 makes), 4.1 reb, 1.5 assts, 0.9 t.o.’s, 0.9 steals
#25 6-6 215 Rs-Fr Messiah Jones 16.3 minutes, 6.5 ppg, no 3’s, 4.1 rebs, , 0.4 assists, 1.4 t.o.’s, 1.0 blocks, 0.4 steals

RE: Official Game Thread: @ Wofford
ESPN+ games of interest this week :

"8. East Tennessee State Buccaneers at Wofford Terriers (Wednesday, 7 p.m. ET)

Another mid-major bubble team is in action as East Tennessee State looks to extend its seven-game win streak and continue to hold on to first place in the SoCon.

Even though Wofford has proved to be dangerous with Nathan Hoover and Storm Murphy in the lineup, the Buccaneers can ill afford to lose to any team not named Furman or UNC Greensboro if they want a chance of receiving an at-large bid on Selection Sunday.

That means all the pressure is on Tray Boyd III and the balanced bunch to continue to overcome the loss of Jeromy Rodriguez. The senior forward's absence didn't impact the Bucs much in a critical home win over Furman last week, so expectations remain high without one of coach Steve Forbes' top players."

RE: Official Game Thread: @ Wofford
Wofford as a likely lower seed (6th or 7th ) puts a nasty sting in the tail of the SoCon Tournament seedings. It means that the 2nd or 3rd seeds (at this point probably Furman or UNCG) will probably draw the Terriers in their 1st game. The Terriers have beaten BOTH Furman and UNCG, and taken them to overtime and a last second bucket in their second contests. Seeing Wofford in the tournament first game would be a brutal start for one of those teams.

But there are two games to go to see if that seeding pans out. God knows that the Terriers are capable of winning them both. The Bucs had better be focusing entirely on giant killing Wofford. Setting up a little first round gift for Furman or UNCG would just be a small side benefit of a Richardson Center win.

Well, that was a highlight reel 2nd half! ESPN Top 10 for Bo? The steal and dunk by N’Guessan was baller. Tray Boyd’s step-back 3 nearly torched the net. A comeback with style.

If some one could post these highlights it would be greatly appreciated!

This would normally be the time when we would celebrate a guaranteed trip to the NIT. Not this year! Bigger goals.

RE: Official Game Thread: @ Wofford
Ugly first half on offense: 25.8% FG%, 22% (2-9) from 3, 50% (1-2) FT%. Not bad on defense, holding Wofford to 29 points on 45.8 % FG%, 33% (4-12) from 3

But beautiful second half: 65.2% FG%; 62.5% from 3 (5-8), 6-9 FT (missed 2 front ends of 1 and 1). Held Wofford to 25 points on 45.8% but NO 3's - 0-7, and forced 11 turnovers. Doubled and ran them off the 3 point line.

So many great Buc moves in that second half: Bo saving a bad Alley Oop pass by catching it backwards and slamming it home in one motion. Look for it on "Sports Center"! Step back 3 by Daivien worthy of Tray, and several ultra quick drives that had the announcers marveling. Big Joe Hugley hit a key 3. 3 of 5 from 3 for Isaiah, 2-3 free throws, 4 rebounds. 16 points for Tray on 6-10, 2-4 from 3, 2 big free throws, 5 rebounds and 4 (!!) steals. Bucs ball hawking and sprinting to turn it into fast break points had the announcers talking. Lucas AMAZING steal and length of the court drive for a slam. Had simply his "usual" night - 12 points and 9 rebounds. What a solid player he has become since that first Wofford game on January 1 when he only managed 2 points. Lots of doubling on the perimeter to chase away 3's. Lots of highlights.

Does this win give the SoCon a leg up on a second bid, that being either ETSU or Furman?

Anyway — we are SOUTHERN CONFERENCE CHAMPIONS!!

GO BUCS!!!!

But once again the redshirt Freshmen 6-6 Messiah Jones (19 points, 5 rebounds, 2 blocks) and 6-7 Isaiah Bigelow (9 points, 3 blocks) had big time performances against the Bucs. They killed us last time, too, with 27 points. They're the hope for Wofford's future.

ETSUfan1, March 2, 2012:

"I guess only Goldfinger can do the reverse jinx. You know, pull for a win while predicting a loss."

Maybe so, but I think I'm 3/4 (not positive) now channeling him. Glad I saved it.

RE: Official Game Thread: @ Wofford
In the Coliseum, Furman led essentially the whole way, but close, before pulling away very late. Furple shot 47% from deep; Spartans 42%. Furple had 5 guys in double figures plus Mounce with 9. Isaiah Miller only 3/13 overall.

What's happened to UNC-G's vaunted D? They gave up 81 tonight - only time other than allowing us 82 on Feb. 1 since giving up 80 in their close loss to NC St. in the middle of December (not counting the 2OT game they lost to Wofford). So they only gave up 80+ 3 times all year (again, not counting the 2 OT game), and lost all 3. There's a moral to that story.....
