Decoupling from China

Interesting thoughts on the end of universal communication and global sourcing:

"A gradual decoupling of global economies has been under way for a few years. The South Korean electronics group Samsung, for example, has been closing Chinese plants and opening others in Vietnam. Mexico has benefited from some US corporations moving their supply chains closer to home. But decoupling will undoubtedly speed up as Beijing’s opacity in handling the coronavirus epidemic highlights the risks of doing business in China...."

The Chinese government being totally cool with intellectual property theft should have scared companies manufacturing anything even moderately sophisticated away years ago.

I have no idea why anyone in Europe thinks it is a good idea to have them develop their 5G networks. Spend extra money now, and save it in the long haul. It's not like China has their best interest at heart.

Do some research on how dependent we are on China for certain prescription medications. If coronavirus really kicks off, we are screwed.

That's a good hypothetical for the "healthcare is a human right" crowd. What happens when the supply chain shuts down? Still a human right?

To speak darkly, if it kills 20% of the global population all things remain relative and the virus is a non factor in global politics. I'm certainly not advocating for that outcome, but it is nonetheless true. Now if a virus is genetically altered to be more lethal to a particular group it is an entirely different matter, but I don't think this one is.

But the underlying economic and strategic issue here is that feeding the Dragon is a very bad idea and even worse policy for any free state. We can do just fine with each other and without them.

It is almost as if the virus was engineered to decouple us from China... 05-stirthepot
