Read that UNI either led, tied, or was within 1 in the final minute of regulation in every game this season...until today’s 21-point shellacking to an 8-seed.

WTF, UNI?

UNI should be in play for an at-large to the Dance.

not really. 4-3 vs Quads 1 and 2, along with 3 Q3 losses. Nothing about them screams NCAA at all.

That 4-3 is a better % vs Q1/Q2 than majority of bubble teams, so that’s a point for them if anything. 3 Q3 losses would be what keeps them out.

Bracketologists always assume more mid-majors will get in than do. NCAA would rather let a 13-loss P5 team in than UNI.

And Cincy is 10-6 vs Q1/Q2. .625 better than .571.

Northern Iowa has only their conference to blame -- if the Missouri Valley gave its autobid to the regular-season champ, UNI would be in.

They’ll be on the bubble. Watch the selection show and holler back.

Why would the MVC give up its conference tournament?

Arch Madness is the league’s bellcow and a notorious mid-major tournament. The title game is on CBS every year. MVC Final was 6th in CCG tv ratings 2 years ago.

It is on UNI if they are left out. They were in until getting blown out by Drake the minute postseason started. It’s like the Lightning lapping the entire NHL one year before getting swept in Round 1. If you’re not ready when the real season starts, that’s on you.

Then they’ve decided to let their conference tournament negate the value of the entire regular season. Winning the 18-game regular season title should have more value than just getting the top seed in the conference tournament.

Agreed, and I don’t know if USU punching their ticket the honest way helped any. I would be hoping for business as usual for the SoCon with ETSU, and no late heroics in the A10, AAC, and WCC (is SMC ever dead?).

It’s not that UNI has more over others. They do have less blemishes than others on the bubble. That has sometimes meant something. But, I honestly think this one has them out. One too many blemishes with not enough quality.

Northwestern has only won three Big Ten games, and two of them were over Nebraska. They did good today, getting one over Penn State.

When PSU was on that eight-game tear, I thought this could be a real nightmare for anyone in the tournament. They’ve lost five of their last six. If they land better than the 7-10 lines, easiest pick for a first round upset.

My own opinion is games in November and December have no bearing on how a team will play in March, but it is part of their resume.

That said, UNI beat South Carolina in Mexico and Colorado on the road. They lost by 5 to WVU as well. I think ESPN will have a camera on them and they’ll have a chance to play in Dayton.

It's true in every sport that teams can get better, or worse, as a season unfolds. And that's true even moreso in college hoops because of the unique nature of the sport, whereby thanks to conference tournaments, almost nobody is actually eliminated from the national title race until early March, which means coaches have a stronger incentive to experiment early so as to peak later.

Nevertheless, as you say, what happens in November and December is part of your resume.

This is true. I was looking awhile back at how 10-12 seeds over the years performed in non-con. There was virtually no correlation between how they played in March Madness and how they played OOC. There were teams who played great OOC that flamed out Round 1. There were teams who did little OOC that went to the Final 4.
