And we're tied on another UTEP 3. Needless to say, this is the flip side of this team which can lose to probably every team in the country. Six 3s in 9 minutes for UTEP, Rice struggling to score, etc.

We haven't scored a single point in over 4 minutes of play. Pathetic.

5-18, 2-9, 5 TOs for Rice so far in the half. 9:12 left. 46-44 Rice.

Some really bad shot selection trying to go inside.

By no means blaming this second half collapse on him, but Mullins presents an interesting case for Pera in player management. Splits with him on the court (first number) versus off the court (second number) for the entire season:

Offense: 0.94 PPP vs. 1.05 PPP (-0.09 PPP)
Defense: 1.05 PPP vs. 0.94 PPP (-0.11 PPP)

Under-8 timeout (7:24) ... Owls hold 48-46 lead.

Lots of very sloppy back-and-forth basketball.

Highlight was Peterson drawing a foul and making both 1-and-1 FTs.

He just isn’t the same player he was last year.

Refs clearly have a quota to hit. That's 18 fouls in the half already with 5:24 left. UTEP up 54-53.

Edwards is 11-20, 8-12. The rest of the team is 9-30, 3-14. I think it's a good defensive strategy to let him keep taking shots. After all, the reason you're losing isn't solely because of him...

Getting ridiculous. Foul called the last 6 trips down the court by the two teams combined.

Geez, you'd think Pera would make an adjustment on Edwards by now...but no.

60-53 UTEP and this one is slipping away. Would be in contention for worst loss of the season. This was a *19 point* Rice lead in the second half. UTEP outside of *one* player is 10-31, 4-15, 4-7.

You can’t win if they hit 24 foot shots consistently.

UTEP has now doubled us up in scoring this half (+20) and hold a 7 point lead.

The shooting tables have turned! Arrrgh.

UTEP draining 3s, Owls are missing everything.

60-53, UTEP. 3:53 left.

Time for a final reversal of shooting fortune ... leading to a Rice win!!

Two awful fouls by Ako ... and he's fouled out. Horrible game for him today. 3 points.

54% shooting vs 24% 2nd half shooting. Guess who's who.

Edwards has outscored us 27-22 in the second half by himself.

Owls are not fouling to extend the game. But UTEP's missed a couple ... but we've made only 2 of 4 FTs. Martin scores underneath with 36.3 left ... timeout Rice ... down 64-59.

If the offense doesn’t disappear completely then Edwards unbelievable shooting does beat us.

RE: Rice Men's Basketball @UTEP (Feb. 21)
Rice loses the game 68-62, but wins the second half against Daryl Edwards 30-24. Bad, bad loss against a floundering team.

This is where I wish coaches understood the numbers behind their teams more. No reason Mullins should have been in the game for the last 7-8 minutes, statistically speaking. When you know you're not scoring and you're going to need your defense to win, why not give Fiedler a couple minutes? We give up the fewest PPP when he's on the floor. Why not give McCarthy a few more minutes when you see nothing is working on the offensive end? In (very) limited action, we score the most PPP when he's on the floor. No guarantee the result is different, but I like coaches that see something isn't working and aren't afraid to take risks.

Lack of adjustments, both concerning our own team and UTEP. When a guy is hot like Edwards was, you gotta make somebody else beat you.
