It really is baffling that our defense is still this bad. Like we're at a disadvantage right off the get go just because of our size, but it's systematic. From 1 to 5, there are just so many needless breakdowns.

Disappointing season. Hopefully no one transfers? The freshmen take a step forward, and the team can gain some consistency heading into next year.

Our all-time record in conference tournaments is truly awful. Have never made a final and maybe made only one semi?

For a little perspective, the last Rice mens basketball coach with a winning record was Don Suman in 1949-59

On the bright side the improvement in Drew has been huge.

I'll bet you by the weekend the NCAA tournament is cancelled. Maybe it's for the best we didn't make it.

Bet there will be transfers. At least 1 maybe 2.

The two freshman big kids might. That wouldn't surprise me at all. Others certainly could, but honestly I think the country has bigger things to worry about right now than playing time at a D1 school.

Using Pomeroy, here are the final rankings for the past 3 seasons (this year's ranking may fluctuate a little):

2017-18 (289)
2018-19 (248)
2019-20 (199)

That's definite progress. Others will have to decide if it is sufficient.

I really have some optimism for next year. The transfer from Tech seems to be the real deal and the freshman from Georgia seems to be a player. If we can get to September.....

Thank you for posting that perspective.

Felt to me like the highs were higher this year, while the lows were just as low.

Also, for perspective those same rankings will show that CUSA was improved considerably this year, so our improvement didn’t result in improvement in CUSA relative position.

.

Point well taken. Just trying to point out that not playing those 2 freshmen hurts progress for year 2 and risks transfers. The 5 sophomores played a ton as freshman which helped them grow and accelerated our progress this year. Now, we lose that edge going into next year since they weren’t given the same opportunity to develop and gain valuable game experience.

He finished his freshman season strong, glad it carried over.

RE: MBB conference tournament 2020
The loss of Robert Martin for 5 games really hurt the team this year (which I was not expecting at all). I think they only won 1 game when he was not on the court. (I have not checked this so my memory may be faulty). Someone will have to step up and provide productive minutes in his place next year. I believe Quincy Olivari will more than compensate for the loss of Ako, with the possible exception of Free Throw Shooting as long as he shows progress during the off-season. I hope the team keeps Crisler/Fiedler and they both earn PT next year along with Malik Ondigo. It would be nice to have some strength down low to ease the burden on Trey and Peterson on the offensive end. Drew Peterson has to get stronger and Trey needs to do the same. Both have great upsides and Drew is becoming a real on court leader. His game and on-court leadership reminds me a bit of Adam Peakes.

There is the sobering reality that there were no Owls on the Men's CUSA all-conference teams and this team finished in 12th place out of 14 teams, despite the increase in wins and overall Pomeroy rankings. It is really too bad that the team lost last night. They would have a strategic advantage the rest of the way in the tournament because they are so used to playing in front of an empty court!

Agree with your analysis, the games without Robert were brutal. Really enjoyed watching him, such a tough nosed mentality that he brought every night....
