WBB Game 28: FAU (12-14, 6-9) vs ODU (23-4, 13-2) "We Back Pat" Game
This Wednesday night, the ODU Monarchs will play the Florida Atlantic University Owls. This will be the first Wednesday night game of the regular season. (The Education game was on a Wednesday, but it was during the day) It is also "We Back Pat" night, in honor of legendary women's basketball coach Pat Summitt who brought her team here to Norfolk every other year. Because of that, we used to be the envy of many schools. And of course, Nikki played for Pat where she scored 1,572 points. If you look at the current ODU team, you see a lot of Pat Summitt's influence. Tennessee was famous for defense and rebounding. ODU has the best defense in the league and they are the top rebounding team in the conference.

FAU's schedule since ODU beat them 75-63 on Jan 25th. For the season they are 12-14 (6-9) with a RPI ranking of 200 and SOS of 146.

@ WKU L 59-68 Record: 20-6 (12-3) RPI: 33
@ Marshall L 75-85 Record: 9-15 (6-9) RPI: 228
@ FIU W 64-61 Record: 5-21 (2-13) RPI: 303
Vs Southern Miss L 67-71 Record: 12-12 (6-9) RPI: 205
Vs La Tech W 77-75 Record: 11-13 (5-10) RPI: 265
Vs FIU W 54-42 Record: 5-21 (2-13) RPI: 303
Vs WKU L 56-69 Record: 20-6 (12-3) RPI: 33
@ ODU Record: 23-4 (13-2) SOS: 124 RPI: 27

The Owls Starting Five (Conference Only Stats)
11 Juliette Gauthier G/F 6'1" So 10.8 ppg, 7.1 rpg, 1.9 apg, 40.3 FG%, 30.0 3P%, 87.9 FT%, 33.3 mpg
01 Crystal Primm G 5'11" Gr St 16.7 ppg, 8.1 rpg, 1.3 apg, 1.6 spg, 50.3 FG%, 24.2 3P%, 61.1 FT%, 32.5 mpg
23 Tanyia Gordon G 5'9" Fr 5.8 ppg, 3.1 rpg, 0.3 apg, 42.0 FG%, 27.8 3P%, 54.5 FT%, 12.3 mpg
10 Glenisha Harkless G 6'0" So 3.0 ppg, 1.8 rpg, 1.7 apg, 25.6 FG%, 30.8 3P%, 75.0 FT%, 19.3 mpg
00 Astou Gaye F 6'2" Jr 10.2 ppg, 6.1 rpg, 1.1 apg, 41.4 FG%, 38.5 3P%, 81.0 FT%, 23.9 mpg
Top Bench
05 Nikola Ozola G 5'7" Fr 2.7 ppg, 1.1 rpg, 1.5 apg, 20.4 FG%, 21.4 3P%, 75.0 FT%, 21.5 mpg
32 Amber Gaston F 6'2" So 2.5 ppg, 1.9 rpg, 0.0 apg, 32.3 FG%, 40.0 3P%, 62.5 FT%, 11.3 mpg
34 Alexa Zaph G 5'8" Fr 3.4 ppg, 1.0 rpg, 0.5 apg, 31.0 FG%, 23.1 3P%, 61.5 FT%, 13.5 mpg

The last two games, the Owls have been without freshman Lotta Vehka-Aho (from Finland). She averages 13.7 ppg and leads the team in three point attempts. She is a huge part of the team's offense and I'm not sure if she will be playing against ODU or not. Honestly the Owls are not a bad offensive team. Their problem is that they are second to last in the conference in defense. But with former Duke player Crystal Primm leading the way, her 16.7 ppg is 4th in the conference and her 8.1 rpg average is 7th in the conference. Last time out against ODU she went for 5-for-17, her worst offensive shooting performance in the conference. It's that type of defense that ODU will need to bring to the table to stop the Owls.

AST/TO ratio:
FAU: 0.6 ODU: 0.8 during conference only games. FAU:0.6, ODU: 0.9

The assist to turnover ratio of 0.6 ranks third to last in the league. 18,7 is the second highest turnovers in the conference. ODU's free throw percentage of 59.2 is tied with North Texas for worst in the conference.

Conference USA Standings. 3 games left to play. ODU needs to win one game to wrap up a first round bye. They "could" get a get first bye if they don't win any games, but with Charlotte in the equation the calculus becomes complicate But if ODU beats FAU, they get a first round bye. Go Monarchs!
ODU 13-2

They announced at the game the women will play in the Junkanoo Jam tournament in the Bahamas in November.

Well the good news is now ODU is in sole possession of first place in the conference. Rice plays on Saturday at La Tech The more interesting game I think will be WKU at Middle Tennessee St. For the game, ODU's defense held FAU to just 28.1 shooting percentage. Their lowest shooting percentage against any team in the conference and second worst shooting day of the season.

I thought the win was great and we played a very good first half. The second half we didn't have the defensive energy the whole half. Took a lot of ugly shots that we forced near the rim. The defense was on for most of the game. The missed Fts and the poor 3rd qtr, still a problem. I don't know what with coming out flat in the 3rd. On a note CAN WE GET A MICROPHONE THAT WORKS. It's way past embarrassing, you feel so sorry for the kids. I'll buy one that works. Multi millions spent on audio and flat screen we have that junk.

So currently ODU sits at the top of the Conference USA standings tied with Rice. Rice was down by 10 in the fourth quarter, but pulled it out in OT against La Tech. More encouraging for Rice though was the fact that their 6'9" center played 36 minutes in a game after sitting out due to an ankle injury.

I hope ESPN picks up the season finale game ODU at Rice. For now, it's only scheduled for Con USA TV. But how special is that the entire regular season championship might come down to one game between two teams?

Also if anyone missed it Middle Tennessee St 108, WKU 103 in 20T. That was a battle.

The WKy-MTSU game was a significant one for ODU. If ODU beats UAB at home this week and Rice defeats UTEP at home, then the ODU-Rice game will be for No. 1 seeding in the tournament. WKy could have tied the loser of that game in the standings, although ODU and Rice both hold the tiebreaker over WKy. So, the winner will be No.1, loser will be No. 2. With its victory, MTSU stays tied with Charlotte for the 4th seed. Charlotte can win that spot outright because it’s last two games are at WKy and at home against Middle. I’m hoping Charlotte is in the opposite bracket from ODU in the tournament because Charlotte gave ODU fits in the game at the Ted and, of course, beat ODU in Charlotte. It’s nice to see that several teams have something to play for and that the better teams are facing off before the tournament starts. Looking forward to the games.
