Looks like both can’t hold a position coach position now.

Just a question...
Why are people so hard on McGee? I understand that he is not a good coach and got out as quick as he could, but do we not owe him some appreciation.. Just asking for a friend

RE: Ex HC in football now at Purdue
He wasn’t there when it counted. His private conversation got shared without his permission(That’s the impression I got) and he decided he’d never say another word. Plus, when he did talk with Elliott, it was 10-11 months after he left and already had knowledge of the university’s intentions.

Not saying what EB did in sharing the discussion was wrong in this situation, but I would have been upset if I was McGee.

I've only been to one of the games while he was coaching here.

Good luck to him in his career.

Because out of all the painfully bad UAB football I have watched over the years, our team was never worse than it was under McGee. He bailed, and anything that he did to expose the BoT was completely unintentional.

I got nothing for the arrogant SOB.

McGee was an a-hole while he was here. He talked a good game and a good recruiter, but he was a horrible coach. He seemed to try to piss off UAB fans & the local media. He called our beat writer an “F’n snitch” for posting commitments before our National Signing Day event, when the beat writer was finding out through social media posts. I about jumped out of my chair when I saw the ESPN ticker say he was going to Louisville.

I don’t remember the story exactly, but wasn’t one of the first things that he did as coach was to kick your best player off the team? I remember reading an interview of the player (think he ended up at Central Florida) and he said the reason given to him was that the rest of the team depended too much on him, so he was a distraction. I may be totally wrong on this but remember something to the effect. I also remember reading a post on here from someone stating that McGee was drinking beer with fans outside the stadium before one of your games.

Yep. He kicked off Jackie Williams. I think McGee thought we’d be ok because we had Humphrey, but Humphrey was declared academically ineligible just before the season started.

I never heard about McGee drinking with fans before a game.

If McGee had fixed his defense he still may be here or hired away. Had two of the best offensive years I’ve seen around here.

That out the way if he’s not on staff anywhere, I could see him pull a Charlie Strong and be an analyst at UAT.

RE: Ex HC in football now at Purdue
Louisville/Bobby Petrino probably saved our program by hiring McGee away from us--and paying US a buyout to take him.

We could not afford to buy him out and get rid of him, and likely were probably heading toward another 2-10 or 3-9 season in 2014, with apathy increasing even more and attendance continuing to spiral downward. Then when Ray and his BOT friends shut us down at the end of the next season, it would have been much harder to find enough people who cared to rally the troops and get it football back. That was what they expected, except Clark came in and turned things around, brought some positive momentum to the program, and helped spur on the charge to start it up again.

So I'm thankful to McGee for leaving, for Petrino for hiring him, and for Louisville paying us $650K (I think it was) to take him.

When McGee was hired he had just been a finalist for the Frank Broyles Assistant Coach of the Year Award (perhaps won it) and seemed a cinch to be a top FBHC. When hired he struck a positive note with many Blazers by stating that UAB could win with the facilities it had and the players it had. Then he failed to win as expected going 5-19 the next two seasons. In fairness, it should be noted that with those facilities and those players the superior FBHC Clark could only manage a 6-6 record in 2014 (even with 9 Cal JUCO players - including his QB - and 4 Miss. JUCO players and Jordan Howard.

Perhaps like Neil Callaway, McGee reached his limits at assistant coach, but how were we to know that in 2012? There were posters here who stated "Anyone would be better than Callaway" only to find over the record for the next two seasons that was not to be true. it is perhaps ironic that when the FB program was shut down in 2014, its best season records and most "signature wins" had been under Watson Brown who many profess to hate and wanted to fire at the time. Now we are blessed with a good coach who benefits from the first NEW FB FACILITIES built in almost thirty years. COINCIDENTAL? I think NOT!
