College Hockey realignment
The seven members of the WCHA who left over travel to Alaska(and Alabama) are forming a new conference called the CCHA.

This is like reviving the SWC in football. The name CCHA is full of nostalgia for college hockey fans.

RE: College Hockey realignment
I'd ignore rumors of WMU and/or MU going to the CCHA, probably started (and obviously fueled) by North Dakota or Big 10 fans who have never stepped foot in Kalamazoo or Oxford. The schools made the decision to go to the NCHC & want to compete @ the highest level possible, knowing the financial burdens.

Sucks seeing Fairbanks, Anchorage, & Huntsville left in the dust, but I'm happy to see Ferris St & the other GLIAC Michigan schools survive. BGSU and/or MSU leaving for the NCHC would've killed them as well.

My guess is Huntsville goes Independent. They don't seem financially in trouble as Fairbanks & Anchorage do.

I think the CCHA having a vacancy could open the door for Grand Valley St to go D1, or for Wayne St or Kent St to revive their D1 programs.

Time to swap WMU and Miami for Minnesota St and Bemedji St. Make hockey regional again.

Can ASU get 3 Pac-12 schools to start hockey and bring in the 3 left outs?

GVSU would have to put all sports in D-I if they wanted to move hockey to D-I now, under the new rule. The others were grandfathered in.

GVSU can stay D2. Since D2 does not have its own championship, any D2 school that wants to can have D1 ice hockey. There are some early discussions about reviving a D2 ice hockey championship but I doubt it goes anywhere.

Vegas Golden Knights are moving their minor league affiliate to the bedroom community of Henderson, NV. If the franchise decides to assist the move from club to Division 1, look towards UNLV

People were highly skeptical of Vegas supporting a NHL team. Now Vegas will be housing an NHL *and* AHL team? Gary Bettman hit a home run.

I want to see what happens in Vegas when they start a rebuilding cycle. They had one of the most generous expansion drafts in the history of the NHL.

Right. It has only been a few years, there's still the novelty factor.

Winnipeg was a wild success on their re-launch - after that success, they decided to bring their AHL team to town also. But that market is now showing some signs of softness.

Winnipeg & Vegas are viable NHL markets, but I'm dubious in the long-term whether they can both house an NHL and AHL team.

I don't see this happening in the future.

The NCHC was started in order to move away from schools where 'cost-containment' was the dominant philosophy on running hockey programs or leagues.

That's right.

I wonder if Seattle will do the same for hockey. You get UNLV and Washington. You need 7? There are none under 7 schools.

NCAA requires 6 schools for a conference to be granted an automatic bid to NCAA championship tournaments in most sports. A conference can sponsor a sport if it has 4 schools playing the sport, but its champion could not receive an automatic bid. A good example of this is ACC lacrosse. With 5 members, the ACC does not receive an automatic NCAA bid.

So you could have a west coast/Rocky mountain hockey league without an AQ if you take ASU, add the Alaska schools and convince Air Force to join it (with the safe assumption Denver/CC are not leaving the NCHC). At that point you just need two more schools for an AQ
