Disappointed to see the ladies didn't get even a single vote in poll.Thought they'd done enough, especially beating Rice, to start getting some attention. Conference curse?

I don't get it either. Unfortunately there isn't a NET ranking for women's like there are for men's, so the only 'advanced' metric to use is RPI. Let's take a look at the teams 20-25 as well as those receiving votes, as that's the range we should be falling in.

If you don't want to read any further, my theory I came up with last week is the simple reason of having fewer voters do the women's poll compared to men's, therefore there is a lesser chance of getting some outlier votes.

NR. Old Dominion (22-3): 27

20. South Dakota (24-2): 39
21. Arizona State (18-8): 28
22. Arkansas (20-5): 37
23. Missouri State (21-3): 4
24. Indiana (20-7): 18
25. Princeton (19-1): 16

Receiving Votes:
26. TCU (18-5): 19
27. FGCU (23-2): 29
28. LSU (18-6): 26
29. Tennessee (17-8): 56
30. Stony Brook (23-1): 63
31. Central Michigan (19-4): 17
32. Fresno State (20-4): 59

We really are in the neighborhood of all of these teams, and there's a decent mix of mid-majors, so I don't really understand it either.

Must be nice to be a major team. Can lose 6-8 games and still be ranked or getting votes

Looking at that list and looking at the SOS of each team makes it tough to figure. I have added each team’s SOS in brackets. It looks just as I thought it might. There appears to be little thought put into the voting ( big surprise there). While most of the teams ranked 20-25 have substantially lower SOS ranks than ODU I do not understand South Dakota at all at #20 wth a SOS of 182 with a 24-2 record. Poor Missouri St. has an rpi of 4 and a SOS of 31 and are only #23. FGCU at 29 and Fresno St. at 60 with SOS of 141 and 204 respectively are head scratchers too; but the worst offense to me is Stony Brook with an rpi of 63 and a SOS of 319 getting votes based solely on a 23-1 record.

The Monarchs just need to keep winning and it will all work out for the best.

Go Monarchs!

The Old Dominion women's basketball team earned seven votes in the most recent USA Today/WBCA Coaches Poll after its performance on the hardwood this past week. The last time ODU received votes in the coaches poll was over a decade ago on December 18, 2008. Nikki McCray's Monarchs were also named NCAA Team of the Week as announced by the organization Tuesday afternoon.

I love, love this topic. It has been theory that voters only vote for teams that they know or teams in first place. South Dakota is 12-0 in the Summit and has a win over Ohio St. Of course it's going to be the battle with South Dakota St that really determines who wins the Summit. FGCU is a beast in the Atlantic Sun. In the last three seasons, they have only lost just one conference game...by two points.

I really think that the message is...you want to go the tournament, win your conference. You want votes, be in first place in your conference to all the mid-majors. Now that ODU is in first place, we finally got votes and people have noticed our record. (plus...we are known name in the sport)

With the way the voting trend is going, I'll be extremely surprised if we have two small mid-major schools from the same conference get votes....
