I've been a Murphy critic also. My desire to see this team win outweighs that.

RE: Game Week: Kent and @BSU
What a half. They got off to a fast start, hitting some threes, but we completely shut them down at the end. Scoreless over the last 5 minutes of the half. These guys have completely bought in on defense.

We are up 11 despite being 0-6 from 3. It’s nice to see an offense that highlights our strengths. The double-high screen with either Spottsville or Morgan slashing that gives them the option to take it to the basket, hit a rolling Toure, or whichever shooter is popping to the top of the key. Simple, but effective. And we are killing them with it. Kudos to the coaches.

Let’s finish this off!

Agree with the announcers: If BSU doesn't press they are DOA. What they are doing isn't working.

EMU is milking the clock and looking for whatever opens up in the last 10 or 5 seconds.

They’re creeping back in. Need to get Toure back on the floor.

Their treys are falling in the 2nd half...

We lost our movement on offense. When we move faster things start to open up inside. Playing pure half court and trying to feed a stationary Toure' is too easy to defend.

Only 22 points for us in the 2nd half. Their threes mean nothing if we scored like we did in the first half. That’s the story.

Ball State just owns us. Still a good chance to win the last 4 games on our schedule. This team is playing well overall. Need to bounce back on Tuesday.

It looked like ours for the taking at the end of the first half, but Ball St came back and smoked us the second half.

Wow, 9 of 13 behind the arc for Ball State in the 2nd half?? (and the last miss was after the game was decided).

We scored 6 points in the last 9 minutes of the game. And we stopped going away from what worked well early in the game. I thought Murphy started killing the clock wayyyyy too early. They couldn’t stop us, and we took our foot off the gas.

Agree.

P.S. I don't know if we got tired too?

Too bad. Through 3/4 of the game, EMU looked solid and poised to steal one on the road. Unfortunately, Ball St completely dominated the last 10 minutes of the game. Oh well, EMU still looked good in this one too, at least for the majority of it. Hope they can rebound and put the next four away.

This loss is totally on Murphy. When the opponent is hitting like 60% 3 pt FGs against your zone defense perhaps try an adjustment to man to man and guard the shooters. Instead Murphy does same o same o

I knew you’d post about the zone, and completely ignore the fact that we scored 22 points in the second half. You are incredibly predictable.

Yes and so is Murphy’s zone. When it’s working stay in the zone but when the team hits three consecutive triples perhaps the coach should make an adjustment.

Sam do you really think that no adjustment should be made defensively when a team is shooting 60% against you? Do you think they were lucky or perhaps figured out a weakness?

Did you watch the game and see some of the shots they hit? Do you think it would’ve mattered what defense we were in? I really think you believe a man-to-man defense doesn’t give up 3 pointers.

The defense wasn’t the problem. Giving up 64 points should be enough to win. We couldn’t score at the end of the game and that’s why we lost. Blame Murphy for playing not to lose at the end.

Sam, I enjoy your analysis. We both know the offense could be a lot better with structure etc. The defense was great the first half. However Whitford made a few adjustments at halftime. Yes BSU made a couple lucky 3 point shots but they also hit a few open looks by breaking the zone down. Therefore I believe a more than average coach would try to make an adjustment to throw the team off rhythm. Maybe just maybe a man to man defense at the end would have thrown them off balance just long enough to break their momentum or maybe not. However no defensive adjustment from Murphy will be made......maybe he should try a defensive adjustment when a team is shooting 60% on his zone....just saying

One of the biggest 'adjustments' at halftime is that most teams do not have two bad halves OR two good halves. Typically, the two halves are different and the 'strongest' half proves to be the game winner.

In the NBA it is who wins the 4th quarter.

RE: Game Week: Kent and @BSU
Murphy is ALWAYS going to play zone, I doubt that he has the skill sets to coach proper man to man defense. Our starting front line, especially Toure and Binelli also lack the foot speed and agility to cover many of the smaller front line players that other teams offer. Lucky I hate playing zone exclusively as well but this team is recruited and developed primarily to the core value of the 2-3 zone. I may not like it but I have learned to accept it for what it is.

Unfortunately as Sam posted, our offense was the Achilles heal today. 22 second half points is not going to cut it and when we don't score we also allowed Ball State to get down the floor and get a shot off before the zone was properly set. Having Spottsville dribble the ball near midcourt for ten seconds while the other players stand around does kill clock but it kills our shot quality as well. We threw up too many desperation shots today at the clock buzzer. MSU's Cassius Winston dribbles around closer to the basket while his teammates are moving and looks only for the easy basket for those ten seconds instead.

Finally when your opponent hits 75% of their meaningful three balls in the half as Steve pointed out you are likely in big trouble. I doubt they would shoot that well tomorrow unguarded in practice.
